💥Unveiling the Power of Prompt Engineering! In our ongoing journey through the Large Language Models, the latest blog delves deep into the introductions of prompt engineering.
Dive in now:
It’s important to remember EVERYTHING in business is negotiable.
If someone is pushing hard on salary you’ve either got an amazing benefits package and culture and $$$ is the only lever to pull, or you need to get more detailed and possibly creative with what else you offer besides salary so you have more negotiation options. (That can have other side benefits like expanding who your jobs are attractive to in the first place!)
This negotiating behavior is very common in the manufacturing industry, ESPECIALLY with automation/technical jobs. It can be INFURIATING as a hiring manager after spending the time to go through the interview process to have a candidate make an outrageous ask.
The interesting part is there is one demographic who does this type of negotiating a vast majority of the time, and it won’t surprise you once you find out who it is 😬
The first approach to fixing this behavior is to post salary ranges AND expectations for how you will put applicants into the various skill buckets. This will set the ground rules for how much you will negotiate on any position.
This doesn’t mean you need to make super detailed lists of requirements, although that is a discussion for another day.
The other approach to fixing this behavior is broadening your company’s appeal to a wider audience although this takes time, effort, and likely some personal growth. This can also expand the footprint of what you are offering, giving people more areas they can negotiate.
That said, the world at large would benefit from broadening the appeal of negotiating in general because a lot of people will simply take what is offered without sticking up for themselves.
White dudes in the US are usually taught from a very young age that the world is their oyster and they should negotiate for the highest salary possible so they do when given the chance.
This doesn’t mean they shouldn’t negotiate, and it certainly doesn’t mean other people shouldn’t negotiate. It simply means you need to give them more levers to pull if you want to have negotiations which can make your company more attractive or more people, or clamp it down to very specific terms, which will limit your applicant pool immensely.
Lots to cover on these topics in the future!

Why do some Junior Engineers with the least experience ask for the most money? Honestly, I get so many 2-4 year folks demanding 20/30/40K increases for a move?
Its a shame because some of them have great profiles but they completely outprice themselves and eliminate any chance for a step up because of greed.
It is genuinely so sad to see their potential go to waste...
