Elections are the perfect playground for AI to be abused. That said, as I told CQ and Roll Call in this article, campaigns can also benefit from AI-derived messaging. We have clients who are successfully using AI to create messaging tracks consistently. What gets me worried is how AI could be used to spread false information and impersonate candidates. It could make constituents lose trust in the election process, which is already on shaky ground given everything that's happened in the last 4 years. When used right, AI can save time, money, and have a major impact on campaigns. But if used wrong, it could be terrible for our democracy. We need is a multi-pronged approach to deal with the risks of AI in political campaigns. Laws, industry standards, and social media platforms should be actively working together to find and remove harmful AI-generated content. Especially for organic, user generated content. Efficiency should never come at the cost of accuracy, transparency, and trust in our democratic processes. Thanks to Gopal Ratnam for including me in the story.
