I'm a day late on #WorldGratitudeDay, but I wanted to have the time to reflect (and articulate) the point I'm needing to make today. Let me be honest: Job searching sucks. Revising, rewriting, editing, and submitting your resume and cover letter countless times is terrible. Stiff, uncomfortable "Get To Know You" conversations are never fun - especially when you're classified as an #introvert on every personality inventory you've ever taken. Don't even get me started on resume parsing & how it's never as accurate as you want it to be... >BUT< How cool is it that you get to meet all the awesome professionals from so many different organizations?! Some of them, you'll likely not talk to again and that's fine - you don't need to be friends with everyone just to be successful. Some of them, you've connected with already on #LinkedIn (or plan to in the near future) regardless of the outcome of your particular application with their company. I'd like to thank - without naming names - all the individuals who have helped me with my search thus far. ((Y'all know who you are!)) I've had folks send me job opportunities they think I'd be a good fit for, I've had folks review my resume & comment on my interview appearance/background for my Zoom/Teams video interviews. Instrumentally important have been the folks I've sought out & asked for professional references with the job applications that required them. One day late here with World Gratitude Day, but with reason. My search has concluded...for now...and I couldn't have done it without everyone that has helped along the way. I’ve secured EVERY SINGLE JOB you see on my LinkedIn profile in the DMs! And as a recruiter, I get hundreds of messages a day. I wanna give you a 5 step process on how to slide in those DMs with strategy! 💡 1️⃣ Submit your application, first. Make it easy for the person to find your profile or forward your information. 👩🏾💻 2️⃣ Do your research, know your area of interest, and ATTACH YOUR RESUME. Reduce the need for too many initial back and forth messages. Come prepared 👏🏾 3️⃣ K.I.S.S.S (Keep it short, simple, and straight to the point) Pleeeease save your essays for your interview. It takes a recruiter 10 seconds or less to review your resume.. trust me, we don’t have the attention span for long initial messages. 🫠 4️⃣ Stand out! Engage with their content, leverage a mutual content, make a cold connection warm. ❤️ 5️⃣ Practice patience and try not to take a slow or lack of response personal. Remember, it’s a 50/50 chance you will get a response when you message a stranger. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠: 1) We're looking for a new job 2) We're looking to grow our business 3) We're looking to upskill 4) Or any combination or all 3 And before you add "networking"... yeah, I get that... but WHY NETWORK? Probably to help 1, 2 or 3... 🤷♂️ Regardless of YOUR REASON or MINE for being here... I'm going to go out on a "𝑼𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒍 𝑳𝒊𝒎𝒃" and say, 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒐 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒀𝑶𝑼 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒅𝒐. Scrolling LinkedIn... clicking a 👍 or commenting "𝙂𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩 𝙋𝙤𝙨𝙩 𝙎𝙘𝙤𝙩𝙩!"... doesn't result in you growing your business... it doesn't result in recruiters tripping over themselves to get you in for an interview... it doesn't result in your boss saying, "Hey Freddy, want this promotion?" Certainly, "engagement" is a start... in fact, one might argue it's a great 1st box to check... But there's more to it friends. 𝐖𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 / 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬. 🏁Finishing up week 3 after being laid off and here are some more takeaways: 🏁 🏆 If a recruiter says that they will reach back out by x and y and they don’t - it’s OKAY to reach out to them. Look recruiters and people in talent acquisition right now are slammed - between a heavy req load and hundreds to thousands of applicants to go through - most will probably welcome the follow up. 🏆 Do not be scared 😱 to ask your network for help in the form of an introduction, a tag in a post etc. If you have been building a solid network and engaging most folks on your feed WANT to see you succeed - I have had an overwhelming amount of support and people reaching out to me and it has been extremely beneficial and fruitful. 🏆 Ask for advice - resume lookocers, LinkedIn profile makeovers etc. I’ve sent out my resume to trusted peers and asked for feedback and have tweaked and changed it, along with my profile so many times in the last 3 weeks and all of the advice was helpful and educating. I am confident that in the coming week or so I’ll have a change in my banner color - and I’ll be able to get back to some normal content - but I would say I’ve had moderate success in the market and hope someone finds these posts helpful.
