Some more progress. The starmap for Procyon Frequency is comprised of nodes and sectors. Each node represented by a hex can be interconnected with other nodes, and this comprises as sector. A node either contains a solar system or an anomaly. Jumping from sector to sector has a distance associated with it, which locks players from certain sectors until they have collected the technology necessary to extend their jump range. When exploring a node you still maintain the camera view of the multiplayer mode, and there will be a mini-map and radar to help you navigate. Nodes will likely include both random and scripted encounters. When a ship approaches you can engage in dialogue with the pilot, or choose to commence battle, and battle takes place in the same place where it began and is not segmented off into a separate "arena".

In game design you hear a lot about "focusing on the fantasy." You spend a lot of time figuring out the core experience of your game: how the player should feel, what the gameplay and world do to convey that feeling, etc. This can take a lot of time and resources to figure out, though one thing I've recently realized is that you can start doing this as early as the prototype phase. Here's a video of my current solo project, a fantasy melee action game inspired by games like DOOM and Quake. https://lnkd.in/gGq_zhbF I've only been working on the project for a few months in my spare time, but in my opinion it already has a certain (albeit basic) feel, or "fantasy," to it. I managed this by polishing everything in the game (animations, sound effects, combat feel) just a *little*. Instead of displaying enemies as grey capsules, I drew a few key poses. Instead of leaving the game mute, I quickly threw in some semi-fitting free sound effects I found online. I tuned the particulars of combat (attack startup time, input buffering, movement speed & friction & acceleration) just enough to get it to feel roughly how I'd like the final product to feel. This approach has been really helpful for me. People who see the project can grasp it without me having to explain the meaning of any inscrutable prototypey visuals, and for myself, I already feel more motivated about the game since it already looks a little bit like how the final game might look, despite it being very early. (The last game I published, RAILGUN 500, had *zero* sound, and very rudimentary art and effects until the last month or two of development, which in retrospect kept me a lot less motivated about the project than I would have liked.) So maybe try polishing your prototype just a little bit. It doesn't have to be a vertical slice intended to look exactly like the final game; it can just be, like, 1/4 of a vertical slice and still manage to feel like your game's core fantasy is already there. #gamedev #gamedesign #gameprototype #unrealengine #unreal5
