8 of March is the most important day in the year. That's the day where we all, women and me alike, where we men can and celebrate and thank our mothers for being in this life. After all, she gave us life. The same goes of course for all the females. But that is a different story. Simone de Beauvoir said it so brilliantly ; "You are not born a woman. You become one" We3 are doing gender. Men do manly things and women do womenly stuff. We were NOT born that way. Neuroscience tells us that we are architects of our own experience. In plain words that means how you psychologically identify as gender, is a social construct. Remeber; you sex is either female or male. Your gender can be anything between manyl and womanly. It's even strange that we write female. Fe-male?
There are hundreds of reasons why we should celebrate 8th of March. One I alraedy mentioned. Two very good other reasons and why isn't it happening?
The effects of patriarchy in the workplace can be significant and pervasive
Economic Impact of Gender Equality:
In a “full potential” scenario, where women play an identical role in labor markets as men, as much as $28 trillion (or 26 percent) could be added to global annual GDP by 20252.
Diverse Leadership and Financial Performance:
A more diverse workforce, including more women in leadership roles, is linked to more innovation and financial performance.
What you will read now will be pretty provocative for some. But. It has to be said. Once and for all.
What is patriarchy?
“A system of male dominance rooted in the ethos of war which legitimates violence, sanctified by religious symbols, in which men dominate women through control the control of female sexuality, with the intent of passing property to male heirs, and in which men who are heroes of war are told to kill men, and are permitted to rape women, to seize land and treasures, to exploit resources, and to own or otherwise dominate conquered people”. Definition by Carol P. Christ
The patriarchy is a foundational tool of capitalism. Therefore it is essential to analyze how capitalism perceives gender and responds to it to understand it as a tool of exploitation. One defining reason that the patriarchy is related to capitalism is that the subordination of women benefits the male worker.
“The patriarchy is like the air that we breathe, it is there, but we do not notice it”
Last, but not least. If you think it is ok like it is, just continue with your chores. But, if you men reading this (and I hope many does) have daughters; is the world for them growing up to be wieves, mothers, makin a career on her own premises: is this how it ought to be?
