Devin, the first AI software engineer. Cognition, an applied AI lab, has introduced Devin, the first autonomous AI software engineer. Devin is generating a lot of buzz online, and seems to have pulled the curtain back on what the first real threat to developer jobs might look like. Devin is designed to plan and execute complex engineering tasks, equipped with developer tools and the ability to collaborate with users in real-time. Its capabilities include learning new technologies, building and deploying applications, finding and fixing bugs, training AI models, and contributing to open-source projects and production codebases. On the SWE-bench benchmark, which involves resolving real-world GitHub issues, Devin correctly resolved 13.86% of issues end-to-end, surpassing the previous state-of-the-art of 1.96%. This marks a significant advancement in the field of AI-assisted software development, with the potential to streamline and automate various aspects of the development process. https://lnkd.in/ggJkT3sj

As someone who has helped my wife learn coding recently, I can relate to this observation very well. I think it's not just a convenience for senior developers, but a game-changer for beginners. AI products like this one lower the entry barrier for people who want to explore a new domain. I believe that embracing the AI Copilot and making the most of it will be the next big leap in productivity in the coming years. https://lnkd.in/grDcz-7H

AI: Friend or foe for software engineers? 🤔 Lately, I've realized that embracing AI tools makes me feel almost like a coding cyborg. The hardest part of development isn't always the code itself, it's the architecture, the problem-solving... and that part is still uniquely ours (maybe!). But when you have the design clear, why waste 30 minutes writing boilerplate or repetitive functions? AI tools can supercharge that implementation phase. Feels a bit controversial, but I think devs who don't explore AI may not be evolving as rapidly as they could. Thoughts? Are you embracing AI, or is there a line you won't cross? Let's discuss! 👇 #artificialintelligence #automation #technology #futureofwork #codinglife #pythondeveloper #django #softwarearchitecture

Senior Software Engineer - Full Stack Developer | React | Laravel | Ruby On Rails | Java Spring Boot
Debugging is a skill you need to master, especially in this AI era. No matter how good AI is, you may have to reach a level of depth when you face bugs (reading documentation, stack overflow). For example, if you migrated your Laravel app to version 8, you will face an issue regarding your model factory. You are probably missing the autoload directive for the Database\Factories namespace in composer.json. That's something AI will not necessarily help you solve. The lesson? While AI tools are powerful, they can't replace the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that come with hands-on debugging. #softwareengineering #programming #ai

AI researchers have found that “agent” based #GenAI solutions that break activities into discrete tasks are much more effective at providing useful and accurate output. Cognition labs has put this approach into practice with Devin, their new #AI software engineer. It’s designed to write code just like a human. The video demo that shows Devin iteratively building code, evaluating errors, adding debugging statements and ultimately getting it to work is an amazing demonstration of complex problem solving, and I expect we are going to start seeing many other companies tackling complex use cases with AI-agent workflows. #futureofwork https://lnkd.in/eudUsegx

Do you recall that scene from The Matrix where Neo is upgraded with different combat knowledge only to turn to Morpheus and state, "I know Kung Fu!" That is the sort of vibe that I am getting from a new tool touted as the world's first AI software engineer - https://lnkd.in/eg_s45RV I haven't had a chance to kick the tires on this new tool but its goal is ambitious. Devin is an AI software engineer created by the company Cognition Labs. From the videos provided via Cognition's website, Devin learns on the fly, reading the documentation of newly installed technologies to know how to apply them effectively. I was impressed by some of its capabilities depicted in the videos. I am not sure if any software engineering students should be second-guessing their field of study. However, we should acknowledge the disruptive nature of AI and its ability to upend industries and affect the job market. Having said this, I do have a lot of questions about the tool and whether it is ready for prime time: - Does it consider security while building the applications? - What steps does it take to properly manage PII data? - If it is trained on software development techniques that are publicly available on the web, how current is that knowledge? I like the idea that we are pushing the boundaries of what AI is capable of but I am also concerned about what we lose when replacing the human aspect. Nevertheless, the genie is out of the bottle and there is no turning back. I only have one question for Devin, "Do you know Kung Fu?"
