Today we announced a bunch of new features and a brand new product (!) at #Config2024 that nod to the future we’re building at Figma where anyone can go from an idea in their head to a well-crafted product.
For this to be possible, we need a few things. An easier process for anyone to get from an idea to a design and from design to code. Faster ways to communicate ideas so everyone can get on the same page and stay on the same page. No more time-consuming, manual tasks that slow down exploration and execution.
And this is exactly what our Config launches set us up to do:
→ With Figma AI, designers can focus on the more strategic work because time-consuming tasks like creating placeholder content or wiring up prototypes feeling are now automated. Also, say goodbye to the blank page!
→ With improvements to Dev Mode like new workflows for developers and Code Connect, design and development have never felt closer together.
→ With Figma Slides, designers and their teams have new tools to build the most compelling presentations. There’s a lot of magic in this one — live prototypes on slides, editable mocks, live voting… This one will be a game changer for product reviews.
This is just a snapshot of what we announced today at #Config2024. We’ll be rolling some out today, and some over the coming weeks and months.
As you try them out I’d love to hear your feedback! https://lnkd.in/g9c6uyE7

🙈 Will figma AI replace product designers?
It’s not there yet, but it’s important to start being aware and work to build a skill set beyond wireframes and UI. Some things that it cant do yet include
💪 Build scalable UI : Right now the designs built by Figma AI may not scale to every edge case that comes with an application. While having the base ready can either bias you or inspire you it will need a lot of tuning to build a flow and an interface which solves for every contextual case.
💪Empathy : One skill that is innate with humans is our ability to empathise with others around us. The empathy that is built within will help us recognise the right problems to solve with the right perspective.
💪3D interfaces : While AI has a plethora of 2D screens to take reference from and build on, 3D interface design is still in its nascent stage. This gives us designers more flexibility to build that space and AI will need more data to build those screens fast.
While it’s not there yet, AI is extremely promising tool and while it may not replace the need but it will lead to a decrease in the intake of designers. 👀
What other skills you think AI cannot take over right now?

The cautious AI integration approach that Figma took with the new update at Config 2024 is very commendable 👏 Rather than forcing you to swallow the AI buzzes, it's much more mature, promising, and actually impactful.
Here are my top 5 favorite picks:
🔎 The virtual search! It's a game changer, navigating thru complex projects will be easier and efficient now. While I think this is the most promising one among the new features, it still lacks the firepower to stand out from the crowd
✍ AI features! Renaming layers, creating AI suggested auto-layout, and replacing dummy contents with contextual ones. This is a feature I can use from the day one. There are plugins for these though, a lot of them, but something native presumably will be less time-consuming.
💻 Figma Slides! I feel like this has been long overdue, but the way the implemented this feature feels robust and first time user friendly. Though I consider it's impact to be a bit minor, I love they way it plays out.
🧪 Prototypes! It's about time they showed prototypes some love. Both creating AI assisted prototypes and responsive prototypes might be the most crucial updates for some.
📱 UI3! It looks way friendlier than before; with the rounded corners and floaty panels. The bottom navigation bar saves vertical space, but it can be distracting for some depending on their workflow.
There are still room for improvement with the Dev mode, components, variants, and variables, but that's a separate conversation. For now, kudos to Figma!

Will Figma AI replace product designers?
Not yet, but it's crucial to build skills beyond wireframes and UI. Figma AI can't:
Build scalable UI: AI designs may not cover every edge case, needing human tuning to solve contextual issues.
Empathize: Human empathy helps recognize the right problems to solve.
Create 3D interfaces: AI lacks the data for 3D design, giving designers more flexibility.
AI is a promising tool, but it won’t replace designers entirely. However, it may reduce the need for them.
What other skills do you think AI can't take over right now?
