I hope the presentation on Black Cladding goes well Matthew Karakoulakis and helps make inroads to putting an end to this behaviour. We are witnessing corporate behaviour across many sectors being put under the spotlight and being held to account. Hopefully those businesses that engage in Black Cladding will have their day in the spotlight too and be held to account. In the meantime though these Black Cladding organisations will still probably come out with virtue signalling in support of the Voice referendum, whilst at the same time reaping profits for themselves from their Black Cladding activities. These are behaviours which go against everything that Voice, Treaty and Truth stand for. To the employees in those businesses, maybe it is time you hold the directors in these businesses to account. Are their values really what you want to be part of? To the purchasers of services from these businesses, maybe it is time you took a deeper look at what sits behind these businesses rather than just tick a box that you have met Indigenous procurement targets. This is for the women who have been pushing against the wind to instill more compassion, creativity, inclusivity, and humanity into corporations. It’s for the women who put their hearts into their work and are perpetually met with resistance, skepticism, and systemic oppression that make you feel smaller than you are. Over the last few years, there have been many reports, from various publications, validating your experiences (ex. HBR, Forbes). I'm sure you read them. I won’t name them all here. The research confirmed that women, especially women of color, experience more psychological harm in the workplace. This was part of the inspiration behind my practice, Nova Coaching. I worked in advertising and marketing for over 15 years, leading strategy for global brands, and partnering with some of the most brilliant minds in the field. But with every goal I achieved, I could not overcome the self-doubt and the constant need to prove my value. Through my own work with a coach, I realized that the challenges of being in the corporate world (particularly, being a Black woman in corporate) were intertwined with deeper, emotional themes of self-worth, people-pleasing, and more. Now as a coach, I accept that WORK and LIFE are deeply interconnected. With this lens, I help my clients recognize the patterns and gain lessons that transform all aspects of their lives. We are honored to share more about the Black Fiber Cohort, a program of the Fibers Fund created to support emerging and early-stage regenerative fiber entrepreneurs and sustainable textile brands. Environmental and cultural equity requires meeting Black entrepreneurs where they are at by recognizing historical and current disenfranchisement and responding with nuanced support. Having a dedicated cohort prioritizes access and attention for each of the businesses' particular needs. The cohort was envisioned and facilitated by Fibers Fund Co-Managing Director Teju Adisa-Farrar. In August, we were proud to announce the inaugural group of entrepreneurs and brands representing the possibilities for creating sustainable and equitable fiber ecosystems. #dei is not easy but it can be rewarding. In the Introduction to The Business of Race (McGraw-Hill, 2021) Gina Greenlee and I write, "... this journey will be exciting and daunting. A journey that is both fraught with missteps and filled with surprising giant steps." As busy as these three leaders are, they found an hour to come together yesterday to learn from each other, support each other, and build stronger bonds. The really cool part? They are members of three different cohorts, from three different regions of the country, who have three different roles (structural engineer, controller, and #dei program manager) in two different industries (high tech and construction).
