In most organizations, the lack of speed kills opportunities. An organization's ability to expedite decisions creates a competitive advantage. This is particularly important in the product space. Product leaders cannot afford to linger and debate. They need to be armed to make fast decisions and to experiment powerfully. Denise Tilles has some great experience and valuable ideas to share on how to enable leaders to make faster decisions. Her ideas are worth reading about and listening to. This was a fun podcast to record at Product Collective's New York Product Conference last month. I hope you will have a listen. Founder @ Effective Experiments. I help Enterprise Organizations build and scale their #experimentation programs the right way with Experimentation Ops - a framework and platform designed for innovation minded orgs.
The gap between ProductOps expectations and reality is causing a 60% difference in shareholder returns. Let me explain why. There is a disconnect between desired product development and management approaches and the necessary processes and governance to make it happen. This is the Product Process Gap (PPG). Product teams want to be data-driven, customer-centric, agile and use a test-and-learn approach, but the Product Process Gap means they are instead; Fighting cross-team discrepancies. Dealing with conflicting backlog prioritization approaches. Doubting the validity of experiment data. I’ll be sharing ways to bridge the Product Process Gap over the next 4 weeks, so follow me on LinkedIn. Or, if you looking to fix the Product Process Gap today, drop me a DM to discuss how Effective Experiments can help. #productops #productoperations #productmanagement #productgrowth #productexcellence #ProductProcessGap #experimentation

After our deep dive into #OKRs and work units, a recurring question that keeps surfacing that I hear a lot is: What's the difference between an Initiative and an Epic? As we journey further into 'OKR Excellence: Alignment in Action & Orchestrating Cross-Functional Synergy,' let's demystify these often-confused terms → Initiative vs. Epic: What's the Difference? An Initiative and an Epic are not interchangeable; they serve unique roles in the coordination landscape. Here's a breakdown: → Initiative: Ongoing, no fixed end date. A strategic shift or outcome connected to a specific OKR. Can extend across multiple OKRs and quarters → Epic: Time-bound, specific, has an end date. Incremental advancements towards an Initiative. Tied to a specific Initiative → Initiative Statuses On-Track: All systems go; key results are likely to be met. At-Risk: Red flags are up; obstacles might derail progress. Exceeding Expectations: Time for a celebratory dance; we're surpassing our goals. Not Clear: A foggy road ahead; gather more info. Archived: The past but not forgotten; useful for data retention. → Epics Statuses Open: Yet to start; in the planning phase. In Progress: The wheel is turning; execution is happening. Blocked: A roadblock ahead; time for problem-solving. Completed: Mission accomplished; objectives met. Postponed: Put on the back burner; awaiting reevaluation. As we continue to unfold this series, my next post will delve into the architecture of how you can seamlessly interconnect Initiatives, Epics, and Key Results within the framework of OKRs. I'll be sharing my Coda structure which has stood the test of time in multiple settings. Stay tuned! Join me on this enlightening journey as I continue to share insights, learnings, and best practices in achieving #ProductOps excellence.
