AI and Information Governance, eDiscovery, Data Privacy, and Cybersecurity Attorney Leader and Innovator who has built and implemented programs in those areas at Fortune 250 companies. CIPP/US certified
I'm pleased to announce that I will participate as a faculty member in The Sedona Conference on AI and the Law, Part 2: AI and IP Law, on June 20-21, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency in Reston, Virginia. I’m looking forward to insightful dialogue with esteemed colleagues in the legal and technology community.
In a recent decision, Justice Masuhara of the British Columbia Supreme Court cited Matthew Dahl et al concerning the reliability of LLMs when they are asked for case law information. Justice Masuhara also spoke at the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC Legal Research 2023 session last fall, and that presentation similarly demonstrated a deep engagement with the intersecting technological and social issues raised by AI in the justice system. As was set out then, there are both benefits and risks, and it's a matter of how the technology is used rather than a binary all or nothing approach.
The decision is Zhang v. Chen, 2024 BCSC 285 (link in comments).
(As a reminder, LLMs are not built in a way that allows them to reliably and accurately reproduce case law citations and holdings without being provided with source material. To be fair, I can't and shouldn't do this either. This issue can be wholly prevented by lawyers reading and noting up the cases they cite, as they are required to do)
Thanks to John Trueman for posting this decision.

I coordinate Law Firm Mergers & Lateral Acquisitions. "Shelton Shares" column for Attorney at Law Magazine. Proud that 75% of our firm is Women, Minorities & LGBTQ. Love USTA Tennis!
I spoke about legal-specific artificial intelligence at American University's Law Review Symposium. I was joined by an esteemed panel, including the Hon. Judge Dolores Dorsainvil (pictured). It was great to meet so many true intellectuals and brilliant young minds.
The gist of my talk? By the time this incoming class graduates, everything about the practice of law in re regulatory, transactional and litigation will be radically different.
It was a lot of fun and all those years in #Toastmasters sure paid off!

Greetings!
I am delighted to share that I had an occasion to present a paper titled Revolutionizing Alternative Dispute Resolution: Embracing Technology and Artificial Intelligence in Commercial Arbitration at III International Conference on Law and Technology at Northcap University in collaboration with National Law University, Delhi and Faculty of Law, UDF Centro Universitario, Barzil. Delving into the intersection of technology, AI, and Commercial Arbitration has been enlightening. Looking forward to continued discussions on this exciting frontier.
🎓 Just attended the eye-opening Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) law conference as one of the few non-academic PhD researchers present!
🔍 Despite my non-traditional background, the experience was incredibly enriching. I gained numerous new perspectives and insights that will undoubtedly enhance my research.
💡 Key takeaway: These conferences aren't just for academics or legal professionals. The discussions and networking opportunities are valuable for anyone interested in the field of law and AI, regardless of their background.
🌟 If you're considering attending a law conference but feeling hesitant due to your non-legal background, I strongly encourage you to go for it! The diversity of viewpoints is what makes these events truly enlightening.
