Amazon has a unique way of creating new products. They imagine the product is ready to ship and draft a press release announcing the product’s availability. The press release has all the details - the product’s name, the intended customer, the problem the product solves, the benefits to the customer, a quote from someone at the company explaining in an inspirational way why they developed the product and what they hope it will do for their customer, a call to action telling the customer how to take advantage of the product right away If the team decides an idea is worth pursuing after this exercise, then they can use the press release as a strategic guide as they move into development. This is a working backward method by Amazon, It is a useful gut-check about a product’s viability. Working Backwards (or) The Amazon Method This week, Pratik Gautam, James Gust & Mamtha Banerjee introduced the Core Platform Engineering Team to the method of Working Backwards. This is a method widely used at Amazon when developing new products or features. Product Development idea is vetted in this method by Working Backwards, starting from the Customer's Problem. Why I am a TPM. I discovered this morning that a wiki page I'd built 10 years ago to simplify onboarding new digital businesses to the backend behind Amazon's "1 Click Buy", is not only still around, it's still being actively used and maintained by the current team. It delights me to no end to know that I've helped generations of devs at Amazon accelerate their ability to launch a new idea to serve customers. Enabling others to run faster is why I am a TPM.

Almost a decade ago, Amazon was updating its codebase every 𝟏𝟏.𝟔 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬—essentially reinventing the way they serve their customers 𝐟𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞. 𝐈𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 🤩 In 2018, Google revealed it runs over 500 million tests a day. That’s more than 4 million relaunches of existing and new systems every single day. These numbers inspired me. 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞. 💡 As products change incrementally, business development and sales should do the same. I believe the number one skill to thrive in this environment is 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲. We need to be curious enough to continually learn, test, and understand new technologies and methodologies. I can imagine how we can grow together with these products. Our strategies must evolve as quickly as the tech does. Stay agile, adapt, and watch your growth skyrocket. The F Word FAILURE is an essential part of the learning process. When we fail, we're given opportunities to examine our methods closer, rethink our strategies, and push beyond our comfort zones. This kind of introspection and adaptation leads to impactful growth. When building the TechOps department for Amazon's Go store (Just walk out technology), ambiguity was everywhere and learning was abundant. We had to persevere despite setbacks, so with a white-knuckle grip and an axe-to-grind approach, my team demonstrated an unyielding commitment to the goals that were necessary to launch a new product. This tenacity not only helped in overcoming immediate challenges but also built the resilience needed to tackle future obstacles with confidence. Remember, success isn’t defined by the absence of failure, but by our ability to rise from it, stronger and more determined than ever.
