I'm old enough to remember when Google search results were not just marketing spam (I even remember pre-google, but lets not get into that!). Seems that Perplexity may help with specific search use cases. This article on AFR gives some insight, I shall experiment and report back. Has anyone in my network tried Perplexity yet? A start-up called Perplexity shows what’s possible for a search engine built from scratch with artificial intelligence. I’m now more convinced that A.I.-powered search engines like Perplexity could loosen Google’s grip on the search market, or at least force it to play catch-up.

Google is testing a new feature in Chrome that automatically summarizes any page. ‼️Why it matters: if this feature (called “SGE while browsing”) becomes available for everyone, it’s likely users would spend even less time on sites. Even though Google promises to respect paywalls, publisher ad revenue could significantly shrink because users don’t need to scroll and search for key pieces of information anymore. 🖼️ Big picture: SGE already answers lots of informational questions. Now, it goes from Search to browser (as yours truly predicted). IMHO: Google (and any tech company) need to treat AI like a layer and apply it to every product to extract maximum value. #google #ai #seo

"Optimise for the user, not Google"... Unless.... ⬇ You're having to help Google understand regional and language differences with hreflangs... Or if you're helping Google understand your content with schema... Or if you're helping Google consolidate pages with canonical tags.... Or if you're having to put 301 redirects for trailing slash variants to remove duplicate content signals... Or if you're having to change your entire JS CSR because Google is having trouble crawling... Or if you're having to make checkbox filters as href links so Google can even find them... Or.... Robots aren't that smart yet. There's a lot of "invisible" work that goes into helping those search engine systems access and understand your site.

Users should always come first

So then this makes adding unique industry specific insight even more important if you're creating content for sale, yes?

“Optimise for the user” is indeed a “yes, but…” I agree with Mark Williams-Cook. You DO need content and user experience that prioritizes the user. BUT…. You ALSO need to help Google understand your site and pages. You ALSO need to make sure your site is free of technical snags that hinder Google’s job. Real live footage of SEOs and their websites. In March Google gifted us with not one, but two core updates. Lucky us! The first one was all about spam. Spammy content with keyword stuffing like it was 2000. We don't do that. I did warn you. The second, which is basically done rolling out now, was all about AI generated content. And this was a massive one, which is why it's taking so long and why your rankings have been up and down like a yo-yo for weeks. Google smacked down on a whole bunch of sites that were churning out crappy content. It even booted a fair few out of indexing all together. I did warn you. AI ain't all bad, I use it. But be smart. Don't just copy and paste it. Rewrite it and add you. Copy that's written from the heart (in a non-icky way) is what people want. Search engines exist for what people want.
