“Spread the word, because we need to act together”
The window to meet the targets set out in the 2015 Paris agreement at COP21 is narrowing with each passing day. As the calendar ticks remorselessly over, it ratchets up the urgency to take real action to limit the effects of a #climate emergency that is tragically already being felt by millions.
With businesses and their activities on the one hand responsible for the vast majority of emissions and other environmental impacts, coupled on the other with their unparalleled ability to innovate and create real-world solutions, it’s clear that the #businesscommunity holds the most powerful lever to make change happen. Pulling that lever in the right direction takes #leadership.
Like Darwin International, UN Global Compact Network Netherlands is helping companies prepare for and accelerate their capacity to adapt, act and create the impact we all need. A great example of this was a recent webinar (link 👇 ) about how applying the methods of the Science Based Targets Initative – #SBTi for short – can really help businesses to better understand their unique situation, implement effective change, and deliver measurably improved outcomes.
Feike Sijbesma spoke during the webinar about the essential role of courageous leadership – not just at the top, but at across all organisational levels – in embracing the insights, mindset and behaviours to effect real change, and how tools and structures like SBTi help. His call to action for all attendees was clear:
☝ embed sustainability in your core business, and
☝ advocate, advocate, advocate for more and faster change, in their own companies, in their value chains, towards suppliers and customers, towards shareholders and investors. Spread the word, because this needs collective action, and collective leadership.
Many thanks to all the participants, including Merei Wagenaar, Executive Director UN Global Compact Network Netherlands for her opening words, Maurice Loosschilder from Signify for sharing how his company is making sustainability an integral part of business strategy, Marco Swan from Science Based Targets initiative for inspiration on how to put SBTi into practice, and to Firas Abdulhasain. For hosting the webinar and Charlotte de Voogd for her role in organising.

Global Sustainability Partner for Women Executives, helping you develop and lead your company's sustainability/ESG agenda | 20-Year Corporate ESG Executive - Sustainability Consultant | UN Speaker on Sustainability
Do you question your leadership when it comes to driving change and implementing new ESG practices in your company? You're not alone.
When I started working with Beth Borody CDI.D, she had major imposter syndrome. She was new to sustainability but had an incredible opportunity to develop and lead a sustainability program in her company that was meaningful and created impact.
Here's what we did:
✅ We specifically looked and building out a leading sustainability practice, with leading strategies.
✅ We worked on her mindset, building belief in herself and her ability to influence other senior executives in her company.
Her results? She created a leading sustainability strategy, started her own membership The Femina Collective for women in her industry, became known as an industry expert (in high-demand) and was promoted to VP, Sustainability.
Would you like to put yourself in bigger rooms, lead your company’s sustainability vision and in doing so create a more sustainable world?
It really does take one person to create massive change. We just need to believe that.
Send me a message and let’s see how I can help, or download my free Sustainability Leadership Scale (link in comments). ⬇
