Many leaders face a common yet significant challenge… We often neglect our own needs, starting with the need to be supported. When others’ performance dips, we tend to delve into the weeds and “rescue” by prescribing solutions, rather than coaching from the sidelines. We do this because we don’t allow ourselves to “need” what we actually need — a higher level of performance. Consequently, - we may overextend ourselves and burn out. - Team members may become deprived of valuable growth opportunities. - We may put a ceiling on our own capacity to deliver our highest strategic value to our organization. As leaders, often what we really need is simply the ability to bet with 90% confidence that our objectives will be met while we scope the wider landscape at 10,000+ feet to identify strategic opportunities. We can have this need met by clearly communicating context and delegating *outcomes*. We must depend on others to “take the ball and run with it.” To maintain confidence, we check-in periodically, coach, and challenge. Having and fulfilling needs is more than just OK. It is a key ingredient of a high-performing and growth-oriented culture.

I’ve found coaching many managers that this is one of the biggest (and most helpful) shifts required when becoming a leader of a team. That need to shift matched with the consciousness and practice of shifting takes work! Did you figure it out on your own? Or did you get support along the way?

Coaching vs. managing is a powerful growth tool for business. It requires the leader to be growing and have support of their own as well, but once you start to see the changes and shifts, it's so powerful. Love this example.
