2 decades ago, retirement felt like an eternity away. It had meant extended seaside holidays, random trips, long drives to no where, coffee-hopping. Because I can, we can. 2 decades later, retirement means so different to me! It is all of those and more but what's most bizarre a realisation is that I don't think I'll ever retire. Not because I can't but because I choose not to. Until circumstances change, of course. What is retirement, anyway? What are we retiring from? Living? Doing good? We actually never stop doing anything meaningful, do we? We don't retire. We just shift focus. #intentionalliving

IT USED TO BE 65 BUT NOW IT'S 66 AND 7 MONTHS.65 YOU CAN RETIRE BUT YOU WILL NOT GET FULL RETIREMENT FROM SS OFFICE. WHEN YOU ARE 65 YOU NEED TO APPLY FOR MEDICARE. YOU CAN GET DISCOUNT WHEN YOU GO TO RESTAURANT OR PURCHASING AT THE DEPARTMENT STORE ETC... WHAT IS THE RIGHT TIME TO RETIRE? I THINK IF YOU FEEL YOU WANT TO RETIRE THEN YOU NEED TO RETIRE. YOU CAN RETIRE EARLY OR RETIRE LATER THAN 67 ETC... EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT AND SOME PREFER TO WORK AND THEY ENJOY DOING IT. WHAT IS THE BEST PLACE TO RETIRE FOR ME? OF COURSE, THE CITY....:-) YOU CAN GET FOODS IN THE CITY AND I LOVE THOSE RESTAURANTS. WHEN YOU WORKED 20 YEARS YOU ARE FULLY VESTED.

5 years ago, I helped an exec in their 50s create a path to retirement They wanted to retire at 60, but worried: → “Am I taking too much risk?” → “Have I saved enough for my age?” → “How do my accounts work together?” They worried retirement was doomed to be: → Shopping exclusively at Costco → Eating lots of peanut butter → Driving a 20-year-old car → Stressing about money Over the past 5 years, we: → Built a custom retirement roadmap → Simplified the saving plan → Consolidated accounts → Paid off their house They’re retiring this spring… It’ll look a lot different than they thought: → Traveling with family → Spending time at the lake → Not worrying about money Once they knew that retiring at 60 was within reach, they committed to it. The era of the Golden Parachute has become the day of the Golden Brake Handle. In the recent history of recessions and government budget shortfalls, many local governments’ approach to budget savings, the term “golden parachute” was coined. It was used to describe benefit packages designed to entice the most expensive and service retirement eligible police, to retire earlier than planned. Usually in the form of post retirement medical coverage, retirement service credits, or other benefits. Ive been vocally planning my service retirement for later this year. Not a microagression or negative in any way, just as a matter of information and succession planning. I still love the job but service retirement appeals to me more than staying in the career longer. I was recently approached to discuss an enticement to stay and I have named it the “golden brake handle”. For my LE folks current or past service, if you were planning your service retirement in the next year, what would it take to convince you to stay another year? Or longer?

🎉 DO NOT SAVE YOUR BUCKET LIST UNTIL YOU ARE ABOUT TO KICK THE BUCKET!!! Use your good china for a grilled cheese sandwich. Wear your favorite clothes to the grocery store. Get your hair, nails done just because. Get that massage after a rough week anyway. Buy it because you deserve it and YOU ARE WORTHY. Throw your favorite holey (insert the blank item here) because you don't have to keep it. Treat yourself as you would treat others. Love yourself completely and give this imperfect human grace from today on. Love to live, not to exist, get by and work hard to just pay bills.
