It has been a year since I spoke with Aldi's HR Team about reasonable adjustments and the application process. Sad to say that nothing has changed. The application form still takes an hour to do, requires a significant amount of reading and writing. For my intern we put down Dyslexia as a disability and yet still had a large amount of writing and reading to do. Aldi UK why do you make the application form so difficult? Aldi is a level 2 Disability Confident employer. Well, that didn't take long! Congrats to Phil, who spent a few days of Easter quiet time ploughing through the new course and being the first person to complete it. Phil described the course as enlightening, well-grounded and rich in ideas. Fifty-three steps of magic to complete! For us, it rounds out the knowledge and skills required to deliver a holistic person-centred employment practice that focuses on the person, not simply finding a job. Coupled with our Discovery Professional program, this course adds another layer of professionalism to what is a complex system. Yet another example of organizations misusing tests to make employment-related decisions. Situations like this one further contribute to negative perceptions already held by the public regarding organizations using tests to make hiring decisions or other types of employment decisions. While the EEOC states that the test used by Walmart lacked job relevance and validity, a key issue at hand continues to be organizations lacking knowledge on the science behind and appropriate use of tests - and not always necessarily an issue with the test itself. #hiringassessments #preemploymenttesting #testvalidation

"nothing about us without us" I feel like some I/DD orgs use this as a catch phrase. For context I have a few smart qualified individuals with I/DD in my close circle who have received copious amounts of no thank you emails from I/DD organizations. I/DD orgs need to practice what they preach when it comes to supported employment. We should be job carving providing training to applicants with I/DD so they too can bring their voices to the table and have upward mobility within their careers Ive been talking about this for 2 decades and we are finally making a small ding in this issue. Ive been a manger for a year now and what this issue comes down to is one thing (political will inside an agency to make it happen) Please do better when it comes to employing people with I/DD in front facing roles who have lived experience!

You might remember that recently I posted about having received the questions ahead of an interview. It helped immensely to remove the #anxiety and I feel I was able to better highlight my #skills and #experience as I didn’t just “wing it”. Besides, I felt #valued by the employer. Food for thought though: 1) It’s already challenging for individuals with #disability to get by due to several factors, such as the ever-so-lingering stigma. So having to actively ask for adjustment or even reveal the nature of disability to a confidential but standardised form / stranger can act like a #barrier. 2) It’s nice to adjust the #recruitment process but I wonder whether it ever extends to the marking criteria at all. During the extensive interviewing I’ve just been through, the main feedback was that my answers lack structure and clarity. No wonder as I have #adhd. It was disheartening to be praised by the panels, yet forever coming second. If only I could pass the neurotypical marking grid laid in front of them. 3) Consult us and involve us when creating frameworks/processes. Yes, I might contradict myself here but some individuals with disabilities like to advocate and talk about lived experience; and by doing so make and impact and enable others. #Equality and #inclusion doesn’t mean enforcement, it nice when it happens seamless almost naturally. As my favourite band, #PearlJam worded it up in their new album: Don’t react, respond!
