One of the reasons why Walmart is going strong is 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Amidst rising prices, Walmart has emerged as one of the most affordable choices for consumers. As John Furner, CEO of Walmart US, puts it, the retailer aims to be "the last to go up" in prices, keeping these as low as possible for the longest time possible.
As more customers switch to online shopping, the second trend is fed: the 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗲-𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. More online shoppers mean more efficient delivery routes. CFO John David Rainey calls this "densification," cutting fulfillment costs significantly. Furner says he sees a trend where customers will order online but will come into the store to pick up their order—and then they buy more stuff—almost driving the cost of fulfillment to zero.
The savings from these efficiencies fuel the third trend: 𝗮𝗴𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. Furner observes that there was a significant expansion in discounts, with some 7,000 items now cheaper by up to 45% compared to last year. These price cuts boost not just the value proposition of Walmart but also lure more customers, adding to the amount of growth and savings in a virtuous circle.
