Throwback to our Hometown Heroes campaign that saw Nike and Black Arrow join forces to spotlight local heroes who rep for the culture and their city, and are committed to using their talents to grow the game in America on and off the pitch.
We tapped in with Teo Hunter of Crowns & Hops Brewing Co… one of the first Black owned breweries in the United States, located in the iconic Black city of Inglewood, CA, out on the West Coast.
This is powerful! College and even hign school student-athletes now have the ability to create their own futures and legacies. The key is to develop the right TEAM to help craft and implement the financial game-plan.

Major retailers like Marks and Spencer and John Lewis have been significantly outperformed by the emotionally impactful advertisement from Charlies Bar in Enniskillen.
Concluding the ad with a quote from W.B. Yeats was a stroke of genius. Is there a way to get this ad nominated for an Oscar? It certainly deserves it.

Price, Z. (2020). Double Negative: The Black Image and Popular Culture, by Racquel J. Gates.
Abstract:
An often-heard criticism about the representations of Black people states that negative images damage the African-American community and, in turn, severely impact African Americans' survival and life outcomes. The criticism then follows that if there were simply more “positive” and “respectable” representations of African Americans and African American culture, then the political and economic plight of African Americans would improve. This reasoning is the politics of respectability that harkens back to W. E. B. Du Bois’s theories of a “Talented Tenth” that was subsequently exalted in dramatic narrative and visual art to produce an effective form of “racial uplift” that would lead and guide African-American culture and politics. Certainly, with the work done by scholars such as Donald Bogle in Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, and Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in American Films (1973) and Marlon Riggs in Ethnic Notions: Black People in...
Isn't it ironic that in the video below Brother Deion's relatives could have been the property of the Colonel's ancestry?

Check out Gourmet Guard. It has become one of my favorite and most valuable commercials today.
Created by Weiden & Kennedy, I am understanding this commercial to be for mainstream audiences. However, it is particularly relevant to and resonates well with the Black audience.
Black people continue to be plagued by the cloud of stereotypes no matter who they are: Oprah, The Obamas, me, my neighbors Joe and Diane -- none of us escape stereotyping. Thus, a big part of the Black experience is to counter negative stereotypes.
Gourmet Guard counters stereotypes about Black men. It flips the script and counters societal beliefs about them as drug dealers, incarcerated, deadbeat dads, and America's primary source of crime. It showcases them as we know them, " good guys, hard-working men who still have dreams."
I've long said that when you get it right with Black audiences, you get it right with mainstream.
I am familiar with Weiden & Kennedy via the late Dan Weiden's articles and "rants" for diversity and inclusion.
He would be proud of this work.

One year ago, The Museum of the American Revolution asked me to co-chair the Black Founders exhibition, to which I agreed. Right away, I thought, “how do we include Black brands in this project?”
Then it dawned one me that the American Revolution may have started with tea (Boston Tea Party,) but it ended with WHISKEY (Whiskey Rebellion.)
So I reached out to Fawn Weaver, CEO of Uncle Nearest, Inc. They agreed to be our official whiskey sponsor for the exhibition and the brand was present during both the announcement and launch of Black Founders.
This past week, I had the ability to meet Fawn in-person as she, her husband, Victoria Eady Butler (Nearest Green’s great great granddaughter and 4x Master Blender of the Year award recipient), and team launched the Uncle Nearest House on the Vineyard. It is a beautiful property on Martha’s Vineyard that allows folks to gather, engage, and taste while on the island.
I appreciated their hospitality and warm welcome. I was also able to enjoy some amazing beverages formulated by Eve Marie Haydel, Bar Manager at Dooky Chase Restaurant in NOLA. Eve is the granddaughter of Dooky and Leah Chase.
Thank you Fawn and Uncle Nearest for supporting Black Founders.
I’m also grateful to have met both Victoria and Eve, as they too forge their own path in the family business.

I might be late, but there's big news, White Sox fans! The team is seriously considering a new stadium in the South Loop that could transform the area into a whole new city neighborhood. The plan includes residences, commercial properties, and even a research center for the University of Illinois. The potential stadium could be the centerpiece of a sports and entertainment district featuring restaurants, hotels, and live music venues.
Ald. Pat Dowell is optimistic, saying the new stadium could be a game-changer for the community, bringing economic growth and a vibrant atmosphere. However, it's early days, and financial details are still in the works. Critics worry about traffic and financing, but the Sox are eyeing a similar success story to Wrigleyville's transformation around Wrigley Field.
If this plan comes to fruition, we can expect to see this new entertainment filled neighborhood around 2029 as that is when the White Sox current stadium lease expires. Exciting times ahead for the White Sox and South Loop!
