Systematic changes can only be made when we acknowledge history. We cannot let the truth be obscured by lies that are gradually erasing the contributions and plight of African Americans. Although the Declaration of Independence was signed, African Americans remained enslaved until the end of the Civil War. The pain and brutality of this past still linger today, and the fight for equality and inclusion continues. Today, we honor our ancestors who were forcibly brought to these lands, unaware of the culture and language, yet managed to survive, persevere, and live with dignity.
