The team at CODO Design is always bringing a perspective and story that gets my mind moving. In their latest series breaking down the rebranding of NoDa Brewing Company (link below) - one particular quote struck me and sparked a discussion between Isaac Arthur and me that could be fun to debate with you all. "In our field work and interviews, we heard people pejoratively describe NoDa as “Grocery Store Beer,” as in, NoDa isn’t authentic, local, independent (capital C) Craft Beer anymore. " This prompted me to consider when/how do brands end up here. It's NOT just size - proven by many cool brands that have grown much larger. That also developed into how to brands keep their cool or do they need to be cool? My thoughts below. I'm sure Isaac will want to chime in. Would love to hear from anyone with thoughts or better yet data/examples. When/How - When is hard to define, but you know it when it happens. How - well the brand stops speaking to the trend setting audience that they originally started with. Keeping Your Cool - thinking about the beer geek audience specifically, Pilot Beers, Taproom Experience and Limited Time Offering (LTO) can keep speaking to this trend setting niche and add a halo effect to core brands. Firestone Walker Brewing Company has been particularly good at that over the years. If BEER GEEK is your trend setting audience then I think you need tools to keep speaking to them over time. I don't believe BEER GEEK is currently a sustainable or smart audience to build your brand on, but if you're in it get all the way in it. With NODA they're talking independent art more than beer and more than location right? How do they keep speaking to the 'tip of the spear' there?  Music? Fashion? Sports? Whatever the audience, identifying the trend setters and speaking to them can keep your cool as you grow. Can You Lose Your Cool? Talking about scale and whether you need cool or not is a tough one. I think there is a purgatory between being big enough to move on from cool and still needing it. That's a dangerous purgatory for business and if you're going to make the move then you better have enough pennies for Charon.
