Recently, I have experienced something that I felt needed to be addressed: the candidate experience during their FIRST meeting with the company. I keep on hearing during my first contacts (often referred to as screening calls) that people are surprised by our setup 😲. Why? According to the feedback, it seems these interactions often feel like ticking off a transactional checklist. A monotonous question-answer ritual. Shouldn’t these contacts be MORE than that? 🤔 I take them as opportunities to gain insight, and understanding each individual's unique experiences, motivations, and aspirations. It’s essential to truly GRASP what they seek, what IGNITES their passion, and envision where they're headed. 🚀 💚 Caring and genuinely caring: it's not just about caring for existing teammates or customers but extending this warmth and genuine interest to those we meet for the first time. Celebrating our differences is what makes us thrive! 🌟 During our SummerFest this July, our team enhanced our core values, emphasizing that we start with the customer in mind. Their success parallels our own. Potential team members—our prospective wolfpack additions—are akin to customers during these initial phases. How well are we valuing these vital connections? 💥 We all want to make a lasting impact, don’t we? When engaging potential colleagues, are we merely trying to fill a position? Or are we aiming to establish enduring synergies and value? These interactions should ALWAYS be a TWO-WAY STREET. Candidates aren't just seeking to become a part of a company's journey; they're also evaluating if that company aligns with their own aspirations. The galas, It was quite an eventful night. I had the moment to catch up with people on meaningful convos. It was also a time to showcase one's aesthetic moves on the dance floor. 🕺💃 I had dart game challenge with a colleague [a fellow soldier in the field in another city]. The major highlight of the night for me was the presentation of awards, while it may seem like a night of fun and entertainment, there's actually a lot of value in gala night hosted by companies. I gained the following insights: 🤳Awarding your staff is an important way to show them that their efforts are valued and appreciated. It's also a great way to motivate them to continue performing at their best. 🤳When employees feel recognized and rewarded for their hard work, they're more likely to feel invested in the company's success and motivated to do their best. 🤳It also help create a positive work culture, where employees feel encouraged and supported. And, of course, the recognition can go a long way towards making your employees feel good about themselves and their contributions. And these can lead to better collaboration, increased productivity, and a stronger sense of teamwork. Diversifying your teams and organizations only adds to the depth of your bench and the richness of your culture. That’s not just the world according to Nina Blackshear. When I think about my why’s of making a presence and contribution to the Talent Acquisition world, I look back at this picture and see such a “late-blooming”, wide-eyed Wendy with excitement to help others. Rose colored lenses but 1000% intention to lift others up. Little did I know my why’s would evolve after meeting so many bright minds. From executive leaders and their teams with a mission to save the world, new grads and intern talent that inspired a new lens and approach of how I connect, non-profit partnerships and that one HBCU Career Director I openly wept with in a convo that opened my mind to the lack of resources, safety and shelter some do not have. For those that have abundance in life, I think about how I can support your next chapter to help level up your dreams. A culmination of these perspectives that remind me of my top priorities I can deliver (non job description related principles I have) whether I hire someone in the retail field or corporate world… 1. Did I help improve the quality of food in your fridge for you and your family? 2. Did you get to add that extra few days of vacation or more time at Disneyland or weekday sporting events with peace of mind knowing we both align with worklife balance? 3. Did I help you open the door to your future career goals at any “level”? 4. Did I notice your high potential and intend to nicely shove you into exciting adventures when you are on the verge to discovering a whole new you? 5. Did I remind you to be proud of yourself as you keep exploring your story when you accept an offer? This is how you create a ripple effect when your heart is in the right space and not treat people like a metric. Happy holidays and insert my (new year, new you statement I can’t think of while penning this). Grateful for my really, really inspiring teammates that make “work” fun - excited to add more ideas to the drawing board and bring to life in 2024. 🪄 Pictured: 2019 Skechers western ankle booties + Wendy who learned how all HR functions tied together beyond just interviews and offers, coming back from driving our corporate new hires around campus in a special vintage Hummer on their orientation day.
