Am going to point out that Charles Coyle, Director of Public Safety, makes $206,000. Compare that to asking for a $10 donation from those at the bottom living paycheck to paycheck and barely making rent. While Charles meanwhile can chip in $5,000 alone and still be doing just fine. In fact, if every one of the 23 director level roles directly under the Mayor, plus the Mayor themself, chipped in $5,000 annually, we'd have $120,000 per year that could be spent on clothes and hygiene. And those people would almost all still be living on $150K / year. If you then add the next richest 120 city staff, all of whom make over $100K, to chip in $100, that doubles the aid relief package to $240,000 annually. If the next highest paid 1,000 staff down give just two dollars (a single day without coffee), we're now raised $440,000 annually. How far does that go to help support the unhoused attempt to survive winter without dying freezing in the street? Pretty dang far. So yes, donations help from everywhere. But really think about the math on display here and how this could literally happen first thing Monday morning. We could give these people a few ratty old sweaters, or $440K, annually, in support. Why aren't we demanding the latter plan?

Calling on our wonderful local business community - can we work together?  It’s that time again - so many of us spent December busily wrapping things up (quite literally) in time for Christmas, then with the pull of a cracker, we are launching into January full of good intentions and determination but with much of the same to-do list hanging over us! In 2023 YWCA Yorkshire supported over 250 women, children and families in Rotherham, Doncaster and Sheffield. This support is all year round 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We work with people who have experienced homelessness, trauma, abuse, poverty and relationship breakdowns and In many cases our young women and children won't have the security or comfort of family to fall back on.  Our charity provides housing, support networks, training and access to education. Having a warm and safe place to call home, and compassionate, professional people to support you through the tough times, can break the cycle and change the trajectory of a person's life forever. The families we support are incredibly resilient and with the right support and understanding, they really can thrive!  In 2023 we worked with some wonderful businesses locally who helped us to support our families out of difficulty and into positive, independent futures, so this year we are calling out to our fantastic local business community and asking if you would consider working with us in 2024 and even making us your Charity of the Year? This month, I had the opportunity to lead a volunteer + team building activity for a conference in Vancouver. To introduce the activity and our mission at Keen to Help, we recorded the short speech below ↙️ "In our daily life, we oftentimes come across situations where we see people who may be living in circumstances that may be more challenging than what we may be accustomed to. This can evoke a feeling of helplessness, of not knowing what to do. You may be tempted to curse your government, but the truth is the government is ill-equipped to handle the circumstances that people may be facing, whether drug addiction, homelessness, mental illness... For these reasons, we are fortunate to have non-profit organizations that can be more agile and responsive to every individual’s circumstance. Giving a donation is a great way to get started by making an impact. However, volunteering and giving your time can be a way to make an even deeper impact in the community. I’m gonna illustrate this with an example from my person experience having been volunteering with a group of kids, and we asked them: what is a gift that we could give you? For a lot of the kids, their response was, well, why are you asking us? When has anyone ever cared about what we want? On the 10th of December 2023, we are hosting a Survivors' Comfort Day Picnic to celebrate the resilience and strength of 15 survivors currently under our care. The event will offer these brave individuals a day of joy, comfort, and support, symbolizing our appreciation for their journey thus far. We believe that your support can significantly enhance the experience for these survivors after the countless court cases they have had to endure this year alone. Can you help us? How does it make you feel when you get the email about an after-work event that is optional but highly encouraged? For me - it's a sigh and a throwback to the early days of caregiving and working in an industry that worked hard and played even harder. Most of the team and broader bonding happened at those events, and I missed out. That after-work event must be planned with military precision when you have three kids with competing needs and activities. It isn't just caregivers that could feel this way. How about the person who volunteers for Lifeline, the RFS, or any other charity?
