National Roof Over Your Head Day reminds us of how blessed we are to have a roof over us and place of safety. Even in the developed world, houselessness is an ongoing issue. It also brings attention to the fact that there are also people who are out there without basic needs. In fact, there are approximately 100 million without a roof over their head and 1.6 million that do have a roof lack basic needs. Therefore, the day not only reflects the blessing of having a roof over our head, but it is a call to action for charity and social awareness. What a shameful inditement of the state of our public services (surely homelessness at the current scale is the canary in the coal mine of public services generally not just housing ). I am concerned that homelessness like this has become business as usual the new normal (like food banks ). This is isn’t normal, this man has been abandoned, so has his potential to contribute to society. We need a renewal of the intention of public services, and then we need to ensure that we have the processes to match. If the intentions of our public services is to prevent stories like this from happening do we have the processes in place to do so? or are we just funding process and failing to see the built in failure. There is no getting away from the need for more social housing, and the need to abandon the notion of ‘affordable housing’ because it isn’t in too many places. Furthermore our health and care system demonstrates the inverse care law more efficiently than almost anything else it demonstrates, if stories like this are acceptable. Ultimately if our public services result in stories like this this for too many people then its not something that only affects the poorest and the unlucky, it effects us all because we are paying and supporting failure and ultimately when we or those close to us need these services they won’t be there. I hope this man gets the support he desperately needs.

Your generosity and kindness should be shared and I hope that you do tell others so they can be inspired. I know you do so much good work quietly, behind the scenes, and never expect any credit for it. But... Sharing acts of kindness online can be a powerful force for good for several reasons: #1 You break the cycle of negativity that often dominates online spaces. #2 You restore faith in humanity, reminding people that kindness still exists in the world. #3 It can help promote a culture of giving, encouraging others to step up, get involved, and make a difference. #4 It is a reminder about how impactful acts of kindness can be.
