Before communist China was opened to the West, my father was able to successfully send money to his [Los Angeles based] client's mother in China. This was no easy feat. It cost thousands of dollars to send thousands of dollars, and strings had to be pulled across the globe. We've certainly come a long way.

This is one of the great use cases for cryptocurrency and digital wallets...centralized finance has failed us in innumerable ways. The Stellar network is a great open source project that can facilitate cross-asset transfers of value.

2wYes and no, it is very easy to send money internationally through crypto, and yes, the fees are relatively low. However, it can be complicated for the older generation to understand and properly set up on their end. There are different networks, on-ramp/off-ramp complications, and the need to understand how to bridge between networks, among other reasons. On the other hand, Western Union is extremely easy to use for sending and receiving money. It typically charges a flat fee of $8 for transactions up to $1000 and can be sent and received within minutes. You can send money directly to your relatives' bank account or to a local Western Union center in their area for them to pick up. I appreciate crypto for numerous reasons, but it's not the easiest thing to understand. One wrong letter on a wallet address and you just lost the entire amount you intended on sending. I did just pay $40 in fees on a $700 transaction so maybe I’m just a little bit biased right now.
