In rural areas of the department of Usulután, El Salvador, the poverty rate is nearly triple that of urban areas. Farmers cope with environmental degradation and receive little training.
Asociación Cooperativa de Comercialización y Producción Agrícola Compañero Erick (ACOPROERICK), a producers’ association and IAF grantee, helps 600+ farmers produce, process, and market basic grains such as corn, beans, and sorghum 🌽🌾. It is training members across 10 communities in five municipalities of Usulután in water capture and irrigation, organic pest management, soil restoration, and organic fertilizer preparation.
After droughts cut members’ harvests by 60% in 2016, ACOPROERICK built 33 water reservoirs 💧 to nourish surrounding farms. Farmers have increased family incomes by up to 35% 📈 since the start of the IAF grant through higher crop yields. This has enabled them to improve their homes and invest in their children’s education 🏫 .
