A software engineer asked me if it's ok to use cloud services during development because of the costs. I told him that's negligible (unless you spin up crazy large clusters of VMs) compared to the other costs that we incur every day in software engineering: building the wrong features (that users don't really need) > hiring the wrong engineer (who's not the right fit for the company and product stage) >  not fully understanding what you're really building (in terms of business logic and value to the end user) > writing source code that is easier to write than to read (which makes it hard to change/maintain the system later; majority of the code is read way more than you think when writing it) > developing and testing on a (local) environment that is different to your final (cloud) deployment environment (which creates nasty surprises and debugging headaches in production) > cloud running costs #softwaredevelopment #cleancode #aws
