What does the perfect city of the future look like to you? 🤔🌱 I just visited #Copenhagen last week and the city is definitely setting the bar high for visionary urban design that prioritizes eco-innovation and economic and social sustainability! 🇩🇰 For example, the city is powered by over 50% solar and offshore energy; plus children learn about renewables early in schools powered by solar panels. Organic rooftop farms provide hyperlocal fruit and vegetables and the vegan food scene is thriving. Rooftop playgrounds & public swimming spaces and more engage communities and connect the residents with the outdoors. And the city invested in an extensive cycling infrastructure! 🥕🍓🚲 Other cities, like Singapore with its car-free zones and many #sustainability projects, are also leading the way for cities to become more eco-friendly and people-friendly. Their approach to sustainable urban planning is a model for cities worldwide, and their commitment to green living is inspiring. Where in the world will you find a city with the highest proportion of centenarians? If you haven’t yet watched the new Netflix Series: ‘Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones’ by Dan Buettner, then what are you waiting for?! Blue Zones are areas with lower rates of chronic diseases and longer life expectancy. They typically have a larger proportion of people living to over 💯. So why are we talking about Blue Zones and Singapore? In 1965, Singapore was a relatively poor fishing village with a GDP/capita of US$500 (similar to Mexico and South Africa). Today, it boasts one of the highest 💰 in the world, with average life expectancy typically 10 years higher than the US. The number of centenarians 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ has also doubled in the past decade 📈. Why is this important? Singapore is the only ‘urban’ 🏢 blue zone in world. It is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. It also one of the happiest places in the world 🌍. How have they achieved this? In a relatively short space of time (less than 6️⃣0️⃣ years), Singapore has become one of the most sustainable cities in the world. Beyond strong governance 🤛 on healthcare, work and social well-being, Singapore has adopted the philosophy of ‘biophilia’ which means ‘love of nature’ ❤️🌳. Their eco-building programme, which asserts that any greenery loss on the ground must be replaced with greenery in the sky acts as a ‘green lung’. Their biophilic design and architecture means that all available spaces are ‘greened’, as well as incorporating natural lighting and ventilation, natural landscape features and other elements for creating a more productive and healthy built environment for people. Furthermore, Singapore's urban design prioritises people 👯 over cars 🚗. Everywhere is walkable 🚶♂️, and nature reserves and parks are easily accessible; combating physical and mental illness. There are so many lessons to be learned from cities all over the world, and it does not involve re-inventing the wheel. As cities around the world continue to expand and populations grow at an unprecedented rate, we are faced with the challenge of creating livable, sustainable, and inclusive spaces within the confines of high-density urban environments.   High-density living has become a reality for millions, and it offers tremendous opportunities for economic growth, cultural exchange, and innovation. However, it also presents unique challenges, such as the strain on infrastructure, limited resources, social isolation, and decreased quality of life. I had the privilege of attending the 9th edition of the World Cities Summit (WSC), held at the Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. This year, government leaders and industry experts from over 90 cities worldwide exchanged views on the future of urbanisation, through plenaries, lightning talks, and mayoral roundtables. The summit’s main theme revolved around the million-dollar question: How can cities take a long-term view and harness innovation to become smarter, more resilient and regenerative? The Deputy PM of Singapore shared three guiding principles: 1. Cities must empower innovation by investing heavily in the R&D of urban solutions and sustainability domain. Singapore is going all in by committing a whopping S$28 billion to its RIE2025 Masterplan! 2. Cities should anchor innovation in people-centric impact. Singapore’s therapeutic gardens using sensory horticulture to promote relaxation for seniors is a compassionate approach for its “super-aged” society. 3. Cities must build cross-border collaborations and partnerships for a collective future of greater liveability and sustainability. The truth about modern cities... And how we can reshape civilization. Of all the cities in the world, Singapore is by far the most impressive in my opinion. They understand and apply design philosophies that are incredibly difficult to build, scale, and maintain. And they're leading by example. Their Garden City is a global testament to the untapped potential of organic, living cities. It's more than sustainability and reducing carbon emissions. It's about creating environments that create happier people. And happier people mean increased productivity, birth rates, education levels, and life-spans. As well as reduced crime, pollution, disease, and early deaths. We don't need taller skyscrapers that kill thousands of birds per year and block your Wi-Fi. We need clean air, water, and food. And well-proportioned, green environments that reduce anxiety and stress. These are the problems we have to solve TODAY to ensure a better future for generations to come.

The malls can be unexpected hubs of sustainability and inclusion. In Malmö some malls such as the one of Triangeln host a series of functions which are spreading the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability. Bike repair points, second-hand clothing shops and spaces for local NGOs are just some of the facilities which are making these spaces new hubs for social cohesion and sustainable development, where social mix is fostered with concrete actions. The collaboration between business stakeholders and local civil society looks as a crucial element that can drive the replicability of this model in other cities around Europe and beyond
