Towards the end of last year, the U.S. Department of Justice released a number of super interesting Trial Exhibits in its antitrust case against Google. One of the most interesting, in my opinion, was a 2016 slide deck: Q4 Search All Hands Google's Eric Lehman writes: “We do not understand documents. We fake it.” As an SEO, I've long believed that Google uses user engagement signals to know which pages on the internet are helpful. Lehman goes on to say that: "If a document gets a positive reaction, we figure it is good. If the reaction is negative, it is probably bad." Unfortunately, Google doesn't define how it quantifies a positive or negative reaction. But you'd have to think it has something to do with metrics like engagement, bounce rate, scroll depth, etc. (even if Google doesn't describe these metrics with the same names). In the next slide, Google goes on to say that "each searcher benefits from responses from past searchers." Google goes on to provide some examples, but unfortunately, those examples have been removed from the slide deck. This makes sense as in the deck, Lehman describes this process of learning as "Google's Magic". 🧙♂️🤔

Unsolicited #SEO tip: Google has a patent for assigning websites a "quality score" based on SERP interaction, which can be factored into ranking - very much like we have seen explained in the recent DOJ documents. What is even more interesting to me is: There is another patent for *predicting* site quality where this user interaction data is not available. This patent describes predicting site quality simply based on the text on the site. It does this by building phrase models from n-grams of sites with known quality scores, then comparing unknown sites to this and predicting what they may score. This explains what you'll see many SEOs say that Google can have a period of "testing" a site higher up in the SERPs - i.e. seeing if it lives up to the quality prediction with real user data.
