Meta winds down Facebook News Meta, formerly known as Facebook, is discontinuing its #FacebookNews feature in the #UnitedStates and #Australia. The company has declared that the news tab will be "deprecated" in both countries beginning next month. This means that news will still be available on the site, but #Facebook will not enter into any new deals with publishers in the future. The decision comes as governments in several countries urge #Meta to compensate publishers for their articles displayed on Facebook. According to Meta, the number of Facebook News users in the United States and Australia has decreased by 80% over the last year. This week, The Economist leads with a piece about the state of social media as Meta turns 20. What started as a place for friends to keep up with each other evolved into a place for acquaintances to argue over politics, now turned into an algorithmically curated stream of entertainment content from strangers. It’s easy to tally up the usual suspects in the win-lose columns—with shareholders and the CCP smirking from the winners' circle while our collective mental health and the old guard of entertainment publishers nurse their bruises in the shadows. Yet, the narrative has a plot twist that many might have overlooked, perhaps even the protagonists themselves: news publishers. While the industry has been beaten down into a state of quiet sobbing, I think it just might be turning a corner: Social media, its biggest rival for the past 2 decades, is now deliberately dodging the news beat, favouring content that's easier to monetise and less of a regulatory minefield—travel, crafts, fitness, cats. Yet people still need news, and I bet that they would gladly get more of it from traditional publishers rather than Instagram if only the format changed a little: the younger the reader, the more used they are to consume news in bite-size chunks from a feed, preferably with videos. Yet most publishers continue to offer long, text-heavy pieces instead. This allows some publishers, like our client Sky, to grab an ever-increasing share of the pie by moving most of their content into a set of topic-related, short-form live feeds. Making the change might be easier than you think; give your journalists a live blogging solution that’s easy to use and pre-integrates with a huge video library (a nod to our partner Oovvuu) and let them get on with it. They know how to write short form (look at their Twitter feeds) - all news publishers need to do is create a space for them to do so with ease. #newsmedia

Let's break this simple statement down... "Meta says users will still be able to view links to news articles, and news organizations will still be able to post and promote their stories and websites, as any other individual or organization can on Facebook." FIRST: Facebook is acknowledging that news orgs carry no priority on content being displayed to followers. Our posts have just as much chance being seen as that political rant from your uncle or the "Have a Hoppy Easter" graphic from your dentist. SECOND: It's so telling that they include the word "promote" here. Paying to promote important news content feels inherently wrong and dirty. Both from the publisher side AND from the user perspective. Imagine having to pay to boost views on important public safety stories like the Baltimore bridge collapse. The fact that Facebook thinks this is a good approach for us shows how out of touch with news they really are. If Facebook really cared about news (and society as a whole) they would find ways to prioritize news pages and content in the algorithm. Remember, users CHOSE to follow these pages. #news #publishing #facebook #broadcasting
