Certain Affinity is proud to announce that Ry Mendenhall has been awarded the annual Certain Affinity Nels Memorial Scholarship!
Created in partnership with SMU Guildhall, this scholarship recognizes excellence, generosity and leadership in honor of Nels Nelson. Congratulations!
Hey everyone!
📰 It's a great honor to get a mention from my college, West College Scotland. It's really been such an amazing journey, and I am super grateful for everything I have learned during my two years at the college and beyond. I talked about this in a previous post already, about how my experience was amazing, so I won't repeat myself. However, here is a post from my college;
Have a read through it:

🏂 To anyone considering starting on a game development journey: don’t be put off by anything. Just live your dream. It’s never too late either. Just be super dedicated and keen, and you will be just fine.
👨🎓 Also, if you are conflicted and not sure what journey is best for you—uni vs. college—just go to college. Take your time, and uni will be ready for you to come after. This is my experience from someone who has been at uni before and then started for my second degree at college first. In college, I was one of a few; in uni, you are one of many. You will get a chance to have more one-to-one time with your lecturer. You will have the chance to build the foundation of your skills, so when you start at Uni in 3rd year, you already have the necessary determination and skills to tackle many things.
However, if you are already determined to go to uni, then that may be the best journey for you. This is just my own personal experience.
Whatever your journey is in game development just enjoy it. 😀

There are few times in life where everyone in your orbit is looking to meet new people and make friends. The start of college is one of them so get out there and meet some people!
The start of the semester is full of social events. The other night on my campus, they hosted a "headphone disco". The night air was full of laughter and the sound of students connecting with one another. And know there are a host of different ways to meet people. I am pretty stoked to attend Campus Game Night next week - bowling, billiards, and boardgames!!
You should also take a moment to introduce yourself to the student sitting next to you in class. It is so much easier to create study group before the first test when you know some people in your class.
What tips would you offer to first year college students?

The end of Teacher Appreciation Week at Orange County School of the Arts coincided with the end of an A.C.T.I.V.E. Spring semester week of summative finals (I have 4 such PBL-based CTE courses I teach, with 2 that are dual-enrollment with Santa Ana College).
The most AWESOME gift I have ever received from a student, in 22 years of teaching, is shown below. For the non-dice rollers out there, this is a 3-D printed RNGeezus die-roll mill, for any tabletop game requiring randomized rolls of dice. For those who know me best / longest, you know for me there is only the Great Game, the mother game from which current day esports evolved, and this kingly gift bestowed by one kind and astute student will adorn my every live session from today forward.
Beyond the thoughtfulness, as an educator, I stand in awe of this student's application of research, artistic, coding and production skills. Who would have thought that any student could bring all of these skills, and a simple, earnest desire to delight another human being (SEL) all under one endeavor, one educational "roof"...?
Network of Academic and Scholastic Esports Federations ... just sayin'!

Last night we brought our Educators and Game Developers together to share ideas and best practices. The conversations and ideas shared were rich. One of the highlights was hearing Jenova Chen, CEO of thatgamecompany speak. It was fascinating to hear about their research and approach to their game designs; "We believe games can deliver meaningful emotional impact and inspire human connection worldwide."

The vast majority of calls for more and better STEM education are so boring, they achieve the diametrically opposite.
They just reinforce that STEM is dry, boring and lacks everything human.
I have to congratulate the LEGO Group for breaking that awful trend with their latest Milky Way set. It's solid - pun intended - proof that STEM is fun, creative and about as artistic as you want it to be.

It’s Friday night in November. Two undefeated high school football teams are competing under the lights and the conference championship is on the line. As the teams compete, students, community members, and alumni cheer wildly. The marching band plays the school’s fight song. It’s fourth and long, with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game.
Most coaches, athletes, and fans would call this a Finite Game. In Finite Games, there are winners and losers (Sinek, 2019). Most fans are not cheering for a tie game. On the contrary, winning the game is the objective. At the end of the night, the scoreboard will indicate the winning team.

This is what it is all about. The student engagement, the community efforts, and most importantly the success of the district as a whole. #Esports is more than just gaming.
Esports, which is short for 'electronic sports', represents a pinnacle of intersection between technology, education, & student participation.
Not merely a pastime, Esports entails a vivid display of strategic thinking, teamwork, and cognitive prowess, gaining increasing recognition as a bona fide sport within educational institutions.
Centered in the domain of competitive video gaming, Esports offers an engaging, modern dimension for students to explore and develop an array of valuable skills such as decision-making, leadership, communication, and problem-solving. It effectively blends students' passion for gaming with a structured and disciplined environment, nurturing both their hobby and personal strengths simultaneously.
Working hand in hand with these principles, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Departments within school districts play a vital role in the proliferation and success of these massive programs. By incorporating Esports into their curriculum, these departments champion a dynamic and multiskilled approach to education, ensuring students remain agile in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. It provides a compelling platform for the exploration of careers in game design, broadcasting, IT support, and more.
School sports curriculums also greatly benefit from the inclusion of Esports. Amid changing perspectives, Esports imparts similar values to traditional sports such as discipline, perseverance, and teamwork. It diversifies the sports curriculum, catering to a broader range of student interests and abilities.
The partnership ODP Business Solutions has with Lenovo helps to shape the way for dynamic and inclusive education models that recognize varied skill sets and interests. We highly value Lenovo Education & their true dedication to empowering future students, with the academic outcomes being infinite.
