TRANSMEDIA IP 🚀
3 of the biggest video game releases of 2023 were Hogwarts Legacy, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. It should come as no surprise as these are massive IP franchises and fans crave opportunities to further immerse themselves in these worlds. 📖 📽 🎮
As video game tech becomes more and more widely embraced by filmmakers, we're only going to see more examples of gaming titles that continue to push world stories on. Who remembers James Bond: Nightfire and Everything or Nothing? Arguably two Bond titles that should be considered stand alone stories in the Bond franchise?!
The audience is absolutely willing to jump in. Transmedia IP is absolutely here to stay and is going to continue to thrive and become very immersive as the tech matures to support it.
James Cameron is completely aware of this and has been at the forefront of exploring technology to drive his imagination forwards. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora was released last week and I am more than excited to jump in to a world that has captivated me from day 1! 🔥
The future is going to be very exciting... 😎

Storytime: let me take you back to my days as a product manager working with Disney's iconic IPs.
About a decade ago (yeah, I'm starting to feel a bit ancient 😅), Disney's "The Nightmare Before Christmas," now a pop culture sensation, was somewhat overlooked by the company. They positioned products in the US, UK, and Japan, but that was about it. Disney didn't seem interested in expanding its reach to other regions, despite a clear demand for the IP. Now, they could have known about this demand if they had bothered with some thorough market research, but instead, decisions were made based on someone's "gut feeling." Apparently, that gut feeling said the brand wouldn't resonate in Europe beyond the UK, and no one bothered to check the data. As a result, unlicensed products, mostly from China, flooded the European market. These products were not only cheap in price but also in quality.
Imagine trying to replace these with higher-quality licensed items – it was a challenge, to say the least. But here's the kicker: this challenge could have been easily avoided.
One of the major issues, not just at Disney but in many places (one day I'll center my stories on my experience working with Warner), is the tendency to make decisions based on gut feelings rather than actual data. Those making these decisions often aren't tuned in to cultural trends and are unaware of the potential opportunities. As far as Disney goes, if things haven't changed since my time with their IPs, except for a handful of high-grossing IPs, the rest aren't strategically utilized to unlock their full potential.
So, do they have a plan for this? I'm skeptical when it comes to Warner IPs, more than doubtful when it comes to Disney IPs. It seems that unless an IP is a blockbuster, it might not get the attention and strategy it deserves, and none of these is a blockbuster. Not even Batman.

These are the characters set to enter public domain in the next decade…
Film Makers & Game Developers didn’t miss a beat and mixed Pooh Bear and Mickey Mouse Steamboat with a hefty spoon of HORROR the min these IP became public.
When it comes to Consumer Products, its key to blend nostalgia with whatever the pop culture is to ignite trend-driven sales.
😈 So what game, product, movie or weird a$$ collab would YOU create with these characters?

Before anyone asks…
Q: How do you make a Monopoly Go killer?
A: You don’t.
Every super successful game is the result of brilliant teams innovating on an existing platform, genre, and gameplay mechanic and painstakingly reiterating until they have a polished gem of a game (e.g., FTUE, engagement loop, monetization) that is perfectly aligned with the current consumer zeitgeist.
Since consumer motivations and behaviors are not static nor technology or teams, it is futile to compete against something that no longer exists.
Especially when that game took seven years.
This is why no one has ever made a Clash of Clans killer or Candy Crush killer or a GTA killer, or a WoW killer etc., etc., etc.
Every successful creative medium exists in its own moment.
P.S.- It also helps when you have leadership who are thoughtful, empathetic, and collaborative, which is evident in Javier Ferreira’s recent missive.
