Forensic Coercive Control Consultant | Expert in Post-Separation Abuse | Psychology of Coercive Control MSc
I recently wrote an article in Law Now shedding light on the often-overlooked topic of vicarious trauma experienced by criminal and family law lawyers when handling cases involving domestic abuse and coercive control. The emotional toll of continual exposure to harrowing accounts of abuse can have a profound impact on legal professionals. As legal professionals you are trained to advocate and seek justice for your clients, but doing so in certain cases may be at odds at preserving your mental well-being. Exposure to accounts of abuse on a regular basis can put one at risk for burnout, compassion fatigue and even PTSD, if left unaddressed. It is crucial for legal professionals to prioritize self-care and seek support when dealing with such challenging cases. By recognizing the signs of vicarious trauma and taking proactive steps to address it, you can continue to effectively represent your clients while safeguarding your own mental health. Imagine a world where we prioritize both the clients and the lawyers. For more information on this overlooked issue and what you can do about it, please read my article Vicarious trauma in criminal and family lawyers: the unseen burden of advocating for victims in the most recent edition of Law Now. #coercivecontrol #trauma #vicarioustrauma #mentalhealthawareness #legalprofession #selfcare #supportsystem https://lnkd.in/gPP-ejM7

🔎 Psychotrauma and Legal Professionals ⚖️ „Legal professionals (judges, lawyers, court clerks, etc.) are often confronted with potentially traumatic situations in the course of their duties. These situations may include violence, abuse, neglect and other forms of trauma, which can have a significant impact on the professionals involved. ➡️ There are two types of risk for justice professionals: 📌direct trauma - for example when legal professionals intervene at crime scenes or are generally directly confronted with traumatic situations; 📌vicarious trauma - professionals exposed to stories of trauma may develop vicarious trauma, characterised by reactions similar to those of direct victims of the trauma. ⚠ How to protect yourself? 1. Get to know the signs of trauma 2. Rearrange your schedule so that ideally, you are not 100% focused on the same traumatic subjects 3. Work in teams 4. Being aware of "why we do this job" and know its proper limits. 5. Allowing yourself to express your emotions." This is an extract from the recent publication "Psychotrauma and Legal Professionals" published by Centre national de ressources et de résilience (Cn2r). Thank you Chroniques des Barreaux for pointing it out! #wellbeing #trauma #psychotrauma #mentalhealth #legalprofession #lawyers #ecba #wellinlo #justice #health European Criminal Bar Association
