Today, I want to share something close to my heart - the journey of healing from childhood trauma and how it affects our mental health. Remember those moments as a kid, when everything felt safe and warm, like nothing in the world could hurt you? But then life threw some curveballs, and suddenly, that innocence shattered. It could've been a painful loss, a harsh word, or even neglect by parents, friends or people who matter that left you feeling small and unworthy. For me, it was the feeling of not being good enough, no matter how hard I tried. It's like carrying a heavy backpack filled with self-doubt and fear, dragging it around everywhere you go. 😔 And you know what? It's okay to admit that these experiences hurt. They leave scars that run deep, shaping how we see ourselves and the world around us. Sometimes, it feels like we're trapped in a cycle of sadness and self-criticism, struggling to break free. But here's the beautiful part - healing is possible. 💖 Through therapy, talking to supportive friends, and practicing self-love, I've started to untangle those knots of pain. It's a journey, not a quick fix, but every small step forward feels like a victory against the darkness. I know many of you can relate to this. Maybe you've felt the weight of past hurts on your shoulders or seen loved ones battle with their demons. It's tough, but together, we can create a community of understanding and compassion. Let's keep talking about mental health, breaking down the walls of stigma, and offering a hand to those who need it. May has become my favorite month of the year because it provides me with an opportunity to observe Mental Health Awareness Month. I wear a green ribbon as a sign of solidarity with those who battle mental health issues. Research shows that 1 in 5 adults live with a chronic mental illness such as anxiety or depression and that on average, individuals that struggle with chronic mental illness wait more than a decade before seeking treatment. The reasons associated with this delay include: #shame, #denial, #stigma, #access, #cost and #misinformation. I am one of the 1 in 5 people who struggle with a chronic mental illness— in my case, anxiety. At its peak, this manifests as feelings of self-harm. I suffered in silence for more than 25 years before admitting I had a problem and seeking support. My daily regimen to manage my anxiety includes: prayer, exercise, therapy, medication, advocacy and the support of family, friends and colleagues who, because of my transparency, now understand my challenges with this disease. By accepting my condition, I became liberated to openly promote mental health awareness and free support resources, such as the 988 support hotline operated by Solari, Inc. for Arizona and Oklahoma. I proudly serve as the Solari Board Chair, working with Justin Chase, and the management team to fulfill our mission of INSPIRING HOPE! This was not as a journey I chose, but the journey I was chosen for and my goal is to reach others like me who may be suffering from the stigma of mental health. As the mental health awareness month comes to its end, here we are dealing with another death by suicide - Grayson Murray, barely 30 years old, wondering what went on his mind when he decided on his own to end it all. As the question “why” looms around as it did for Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain, everyone’s favourite Chester Bennington and so many more known and unknown, we wonder if it could have been prevented if there were right interventions in place, if depression and other disorders could have been treated appropriately so that the person doesn’t feel that he has to escape from his body, if other exit routes could have been figured from emotional and mental pain like they exist in medical science, probably suicide could be prevented. Regardless of how we analyse and what we say and how many times we write about this, it will be forgotten a week later and 3 months down the line someone else will be writing on suicide prevention again and the necessity to be a better person for the ones who are suffering. But what really needs to be acknowledged right now is the need for interventions - therapeutically and medically. More sophisticated parameters to identify the symptoms and disorders, finding the right treatment and allowing the person to recover in safe space without rushing him or her. More importantly, creating that safe space. I have been in mental health for quite sometime, no matter where I go and what I do here onwards, I will always advocate for it and for the ones who are suffering from it. For the ones who are dealing with it anyway - whether you are a caregiver or a person suffering from a disorder or any emotional pain which is overwhelming, I would like to tell you one thing which my father always said “ If there is a problem in this world, or this universe and beyond, there is a solution to it, you may not have discovered or invented it, you may not even have the qualification or skill set to do so, yet, it doesn’t mean it can’t be discovered or found, it exists out there to be discovered” I have lived by this and it has proven to be a dot-on for me.
