#LaborDay is Sep 4, 2023. Here are some of the key reasons why Labor Day is celebrated in the USA: 1) To honor the contributions and achievements of American workers. It celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers and the labor movement. 2) To mark the unofficial end of summer. For many Americans, Labor Day weekend signifies the transition into fall and the start of school semesters. To provide a three-day weekend and more leisure time. The holiday allows people to enjoy a day off to spend with family and friends or visit them. High expected travel this weekend, reflects that. 3) To reflect on the history of labor rights struggles. Labor Day commemorates the efforts to achieve reforms like the 8-hour work day, child labor laws, workplace safety standards, etc. 4) To recognize the labor union movement. Efforts by early unions like the Knights of Labor led to establishing Labor Day as a federal holiday in 1894. To take a break before the busy fall season. People can relax from summer activities and energize before the hustle of autumn. 5) To benefit from sales and promotions. Retailers and brands offer Labor Day deals, sales and discounts to attract customer traffic. 6) To enjoy public events and activities. Many communities host parades, BBQs, fireworks, concerts and festivals over the Labor Day weekend. So in summary, Labor Day in the US recognizes workers' contributions, provides a late summer long weekend, and marks the unofficial end of summer before autumn begins. Please share how you are celebrating this Labor Day.

🗓️ Greetings of May Day to dear colleagues, fellow professionals, and everyone whose hard work and contributions are taking the economy forward! 🔎 Let's take this opportunity to revisit the origins of May Day, and why it is imperative to uphold its values: ℹ️ Labor Day in the United States and Canada has its roots in New York City in 1882. It began as a day off to honor workers' contributions, organized by a union to give them a rare rest and recognition day. ℹ️ This celebration emerged amidst the challenges of the Industrial Revolution, marked by demands for fair wages, an end to child labor, and the right to unionize. However, labor unions faced resistance from companies, leading to violent clashes like the Haymarket Square Riot of 1886. ℹ️ On May 1st of that year, hundreds of thousands of workers nationwide went on strike, demanding better working conditions and shorter working hours. The strike was peaceful at first, but on May 4th, a bomb exploded at a labor demonstration in Chicago’s Haymarket Square, killing several people and injuring many others. Labor Day became a federal holiday in the US in 1894. However, significant labor reforms, such as the eight-hour workday and the prohibition of child labor, were not realized until the Great Depression era under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as a continuation of the essence of Labor Day. 👉🏻 It is essential to pay homage and celebrate May Day in our times to fully appreciate the sacrifices of the rioters that led to the many benefits that we enjoy at work today: ✅ the eight-hour workday ✅ benefits and pensions ✅ labor rights 💡 May 1st is now a day for workers to demand better conditions, fair wages, and labor rights worldwide. It's marked by parades, rallies, and events celebrating the achievements of the labor movement and advocating for further improvements in working conditions. ⏫ May the spirit of May Day mark greater professional fulfillment for us all! #history #mayday #laborday

Ever wondered why Labor Day instead of May Day? Here’s a less explored perspective. Americans are unique. Our system of measurements, date formats, and even the amount of ice in our drinks, distinctly sets us apart. Another peculiarity? Celebrating Labor Day instead of May Day like the rest of the world - a puzzle considering both days are of U.S. origin. Dig deep, and you'll uncover politics. Labor Day's inception is debatable, attributed to either Peter McGuire or Mathew Maguire, both union leaders. The former was favored as the ‘father’ to suppress any radicalism hints because Maguire was a known radical. The first Labor Day occurred in 1882, New York, with a parade, and a picnic financed through ticket sales to union members. It was a hit, and the tradition spread rapidly across states and cities. Conversely, May Day, started as an already existing spring holiday, morphed into a labor rights observance in 1884 when unions set it as a deadline for implementing an eight-hour workday. It was more radical and political, less joyful, which affected its popularity. It was only in 1894 that Labor Day became federal, thanks to President Grover Cleveland, amidst the Pullman Strike chaos. Seen as a maneuver to appease the labor movement while sidelining May Day's radicalism, Labor Day has since been a standout holiday in America's unique calendar. #Labor Day
