Your friends and loved ones are your superpowers.
Especially if you’re feeling lost and stuck at work.
Which, to be honest, happens to a lot of us!
That was certainly the case for me during my entire 7 years at BlackRock and even at the point when I quit, I faced a huge amount of fear and doubts.
But having gone through that entire process - and helped many others do the same! - I’ve come to realise the importance of my personal network.
And how this rings true for everyone else too.
Here’s why: We are the first people to put ourselves down.
To think that we are:
❌ Useless.
❌ Mediocre at work.
❌ Unemployable elsewhere (if we dare to leave our current job!).
But guess what?
Your family and friends will probably have very different things to say about you.
I had a client who was once convinced that she was on the verge of being fired. But when I pushed her to do proper due diligence on herself, she discovered a startling truth: She was overperforming.
The only reason she felt that way was because she was placing superhuman expectations upon herself!
This brings me back to the point of this post: Your friends and family.
If you have no idea what you’re good at and/or passionate about, do these 3 steps:
1️⃣ Make a list of your top 3 - 5 closest friends
Select friends who’ve known you from different stages of your life or context, e.g.:
A colleague
A childhood friend
Your partner
A close family friend
2️⃣ Send this WhatsApp to them
“Hey friend!
I’m wondering if you can help me with something. What would you say I’m most passionate about?”
3️⃣ Data Collection
Watch those answers trickle in.
Collect them in a single document, read them repeatedly and internalise the answers.
Try to spot the commonality between all of the responses.
That’s a hint on the kind of career that is perfect for you! 😉
