I recently finished reading "Fans First" by Jesse Cole, a book about the Savannah Bananas, a collegiate summer league baseball team in Savannah, Georgia. Known for their entertaining and unconventional approach, the Bananas have gained popularity by focusing on fan experience and innovative marketing. Their unique game-day atmosphere, featuring choreographed dances and on-field antics, creates fun and memorable experiences. Brand is anything your company does publicly. Not just logos, colors, and design. Action. What and who you support. That's what makes this Bandit "Unsponsored" campaign at the Olympic Trials so cool. By NOT slapping their logo on a few stars athletes and instead supporting all the athletes that don't currently have big sponsorship deals they: 1) Draw attention these athletes, thereby supporting them, and they don't stand in their way if they want tos sign deals with bigger brands. 2) Draw attention to their brand (despite the lack of logos/brand identifiers). 3) Take away share of voice from their competitors that they usually receive organically from unsponsored runners throwing on their competitor's apparel for a fraction of the price of the big sponsorship deals. Some say the NFL means not for long. For name, image, and likeness (or NIL), my acronym is not interesting lately. Student-athletes underestimate how much time, strategy, and creativity is required for NIL success. You need to stay relevant, interesting, and perform well in your sport. Companies want to work with student-athletes that fit their brand image and can provide value to their customers. Understand the exact value you can provide and leverage that in your brand outreach. Although a lot of NIL money is done through collectives, student-athletes can successfully monetize their personal brands if they work at it consistently.

My first NIL deal: Liquid IV. The NCAA allowed athletes to begin monetizing off of their Name, Image, and Likeness on July 1st, 2021 and UConn allowed athletes to begin monetizing on July 7th, 2021. Liquid IV was the first brand I knew I wanted to work with, so I dm’ed them on Instagram. This picture was posted July 14th, 2021. For me, Liquid IV was the perfect partnership. For those that don’t know, I have POTS. I typically drink 7 liquid IV packets a day. I had a small following on TikTok and leveraged it to receive compensation and free product. Most of my TikTok’s were day in the life videos, so I was able to organically include the product into my content. When thinking through what brands you want to partner with, it’s so important to target brands you already love and can organically incorporate into your content. When athletes I work with tell me they are struggling to hear from brands, I always tell them to try posting on their Instagram story examples of them consuming or using the brands product and then tagging them without compensation. Give it a try!
