After finishing my chemo and getting the first clear CT scan, I thought everything was going to change automatically. The flowers would be brighter, days will be always sunny, and I would feel alive like never before. After all, I had beaten cancer. But that was not the case. Things didn’t change automatically. I just went back to my old routine, same friends, same obligations, same life. And that got me into one of the darkest places I’ve been. Only after changing my perspective, I started to be intentional about my day to day. That’s how I refound my purpose and started to feel alive again. As we step into 2024, it's common for many to expect the turn of the calendar to magically usher in change. However, the reality is that a new year isn't a wand-waving moment that transforms our lives instantly. Real change, the kind that truly shapes a better year (and a better life), lies in our actions and decisions. It's about evolving our behaviors, making conscious choices, and taking deliberate steps towards our goals. The new year is more of a symbolic reminder, a prompt to reflect and recalibrate. It's an opportunity to assess what worked or didn't in the past year and to plan for a different approach or a renewed commitment to our aspirations. The essence of a better year doesn't reside in the year itself but in how we choose to live each day within it.

And I’m going to borrow from one of my favourites here “Why do you blow out my candle. Is it to make yours shine brighter?” How many of us have had , or indeed have a manager who has done just that? As a survivor of multiple stroke events, my intelligence has not changed (it doesn’t) how i get to a decision and my confidence has greatly. My daughter describes my mental agility like this. You plan a journey to the corner shop but find the road totally blocked so you now need to take a diversion, only to find that road also blocked. It just takes a bit longer to get there! Neuroplasticity is the ability of the brain, to create new pathways in the brain to deal with the damage from Stroke and brain injury. I believe that mental agility training after stroke can help to develop these new pathways quicker and get more survivors back and able to work. Our heart, that resilient organ tirelessly beating within our chests, deserves our attention and care. Cardiovascular diseases (CDs) continue to be the leading cause of death worldwide. These include heart diseases and strokes, which claim millions of lives yearly. The alarming fact is that many of these deaths are preventable through simple lifestyle changes and regular check-ups. On this World Heart Day, let's make a commitment to prioritize our heart health: 1. Healthy Diet: Start by making mindful food choices. Incorporate more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet. Limit saturated and trans fats, as well as excess salt and sugar. Your heart will thank you for it. Regular Exercise: Physical activity is the best gift you can give your heart. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise per week. Whether it's a brisk walk, a jog, or a dance class, find an activity you enjoy and stick with it. A fresh new year brings with it an opportunity to begin again. I have always loved New Year’s Eve for that very reason and welcome January, even with the dark and gloom that heralds the start of 2024 in the UK. This year, for me, feels radically different. I feel less optimism than I have felt in a long time. Partly, because the last two months of 2023 were so difficult for me and my family. My husband received a cancer diagnosis out of the blue at the start of November. Incurable (but treatable), extremely rare (but we caught it early) and with that have come a host of unwelcome thoughts, difficult conversations and huge fluctuations in emotions. Yet life goes on. There is joy and life is so precious. As a family we are learning to navigate great uncertainty but actually, life is always uncertain. Tomorrow is not a given – we just think and assume that it will be. In simple terms this is what I now intend for 2024.
