Can user/consumers' '#privacy and #consent preferences' management become a 'new digital service' for consumers and enterprises? We ErnieApp | Your Privacy Knowledge Manager believe the answer it yes. We go even further. We believe such #intermediation #service to be key to the success of the #AI connected #digital #economy. The digital economy can be represented roughly like an equation: 2 sided (people on one side and companies on the other). Users want great digital innovative services, frictionless UX, easy access to content, entertainment, public services & productivity. Companies ambition to compete in offering these attractive services to consumers and monetise audiences. To do so companies need to rely on creative ways to collect, use, reuse data including sharing it under #B2B frameworks. But the equation fails if one side (the users) don't participate anymore. And data become scarce. Indeed asymmetries remains huge. Users ignore that companies need their engagement + conversions data. Companies prefer not to tell users how much they are dependent on such engagement + conversion data. The unwillingness to admit it toward the users is is the biggest mistake companies do. As companies depend on users' consent to monetize most data, the data transparency card becomes a priority. #GDPR is all about data collection/use transparency but companies dislike it as much as having to admit toward users that they depend on them. So what can be done? Simple. Companies need to change their approach to the data ownership conundrum (is data mines or does it belong to users?). Companies need to start acknowledging that the 'rights of using data' stays with users. Because of this upstream right, users must be recognised, incentivised and rewarded toward #datasharing. Giving to users access to a a digital service -free or paid-it's not anymore sufficient to reward users. Something else need to be offered. Something big, to #incentivise users to continue to cooperate with the digital services so that data can continue to be generated and flow. Companies should start offering much #greatertransparency in how they collect/use #data. It boils down to start exposing privacy settings and their labelling very openly, in such way to incentivise users to agree to share data rather than not. For those asking 'what's ErnieApp business model' the answer is simple. We've started by offering to users a quick and easy access to privacy & consent configurations settings on third party apps 'as as service' but we at the same time offer to the companies to benefit from the "consent as a service" opportunity for their installed base. We offer to companies to integrate their privacy dashboard with our mobile app and start engaging with their users in light of re-acquiring, refreshing, updating the state of the consent to match their #business #strategy. #gatekeepers #verticals #mediacompanies #utilities #telecoms

DMA day has arrived. Here is my initial summary of the gatekeepers’ compliance with Article 6(9), which requires effective data portability to third parties authorised by the user, with continuous and real-time access. Headline is that none of the gatekeepers have built a genuinely continuous and real-time tool. This was expected, and we will be urging the European Commission to keep pushing for that outcome in the medium term. In the near term, The Coalition for Online Data Empowerment will be pushing for effective tools with extended authorisation for recurring transfers. Summary of each #gatekeepers approach... Meta is top of the class. It seems its tool will allow users to authorise recurring transfers of data to third parties for up to one year. Meta has made this service available on a global basis, showing it views this as a positive step forwards and not something to be done grudgingly. CODE Action: we are seeking further information on how third parties will be approved to be listed as recipients. Subject to Meta's approval process not being overly restrictive, we expect to provide positive feedback to the Commission on Meta’s starting position. Amazon and TikTok appear to have produced similar outcomes. Both have APIs with authorisation for recurring transfers, with Amazon allowing auth for up to 180 days. Sadly neither company believes their users outside the EEA should benefit from the tool. CODE Action: we will be submitting complaints to the UK’s Information Commissioner's Office and Competition and Markets Authority, on the basis that both companies are deliberately failing to meet data portability requirements set out in the UK GDPR. Google’s API is enabling authorisation for one-off transfers, which won’t be a sustainable position. Some extra credit goes to Google for making its tool available in the UK as well as the EEA. CODE Action: we will be pushing the Commission to secure extended authorisation from Google ASAP, for a minimum of 180 days as per the other gatekeepers’ approach. Microsoft appears to have introduced a data portability API for LinkedIn only, and is enabling authorisation for up to one year (update not reflected in table). Sadly it seems Microsoft also doesn’t want users outside the EEA to benefit from its new tool. CODE Action: we will be submitting a complaint to the UK’s ICO, alongside Amazon and TikTok. Apple’s approach is unique and narrowly focused. It will be enabling its users to transfer data from its App Store to authorised rival app stores. Users will be able to authorise daily recurring transfers for up to 30 days, or weekly transfers for up to 180 days. It is also working on a feature for users to transfer Safari data to other browsers. CODE Action: we will be pressing the Commission to take urgent action to require Apple’s data portability functionality to be available to all types of third parties, and not limited to facilitating switching between like-for-like services.
