It was determined the UAVs presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels in the region. General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) has advanced its Aerial Recovery System for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems/Air-Launched Effects (SUAS/ALE). Read more >> https://hubs.la/Q025C2Mc0 The company deployed and retracted a towline with a “smart end feature” from a GA-ASI MQ-20 Avenger® Unmanned Aircraft System in flight. During the demonstration, a hoist from Breeze-Eastern LLC equipped with GA-ASI’s smart end feature was integrated into Avenger’s payload bay. While in flight, the towline was deployed away from Avenger to the optimal distance for aerial recovery. The smart end feature was able to wirelessly transmit its position back to Avenger, confirming its ability to transmit the data to a nearby SUAS/ALE for aerial recovery. “Integrating air-launched UAS from Group 5 unmanned aircraft is possible, in part, thanks to advances in relative navigation technology, complex towline analysis, and multi-aircraft control being pioneered by GA-ASI.” - Mike Atwood, Vice President of Advanced Programs, GA-ASI. QinetiQ has launched Jackdaw, a low-cost, high-performance ‘disposable’ uncrewed aerial system (UAS). Designed for swarming and collaborative autonomous operations including crewed-uncrewed teaming, Jackdaw will fulfil multiple missions including reconnaissance, electronic warfare, airborne decoy and threat representation. Whilst Jackdaw is designed to be reusable, its low-cost disposable characteristics enhance operational flexibility by providing commanders with the option to sacrifice assets when needed. The growing focus on the development of power trains specifically for UAVs gives UAV developers such as AAI the ability to focus on system functionality, rather than the additional and highly specialised area of motor design. This is in stark contrast to where we began, way back in 2018, when we had to address custom designs to achieve the thrust/power, range and reliability requirements for each and every concept. Heavy fuels - also called bunker fuels - are generally specific to naval applications requiring long haul (24 hour plus) capabilities; with their low combustibility and high energy density characteristics being ideal for UAVs operating at sea. This is driven by the lower energy density (J/m3) available from batteries and hydrogen/hydrogen fuel cells; with the latter expressly a ‘no go’ for naval vessels due to the explosion risk associated with compressed gas storage cylinders, which have an additional requirement of compressors rated for filling specialised cylinders to the very high pressures required. #uavs #propulsionsystems #navyuavs https://lnkd.in/dndKC6NN
