Thanks to BOI (Board of Innovation) team for organising a wonderful #AutonomousInnovationSummit - with many inspiring speakers and insights still to digest. It proved that AI adoption is definitely not that far out in the future. There are great strides already being made in the innovation sphere, with opportunities ahead both from a front and back-end perspective.
Most fundamental message for me, was that rather than fear what's coming, if we start embracing it, we have the opportunity to gain new perspectives, and access the room to be truly creative. And it is up to the early adopters to establish the norms around what can be done. My main question now is with so much out there already, how do we begin to upskill? 😊
Here are some immediate takeaways from sessions I was able to attend the last two days:
✅ AI at scale will productise organisational processes and functions: Customer-facing innovation aside, AI will shift internal processes, pushing every org to become software companies where product owners will lead key functions. True AI-led disruption will emerge when AI-led product and services are combined with AI-native operating models. (Philippe De Ridder, Amir Ouki)
✅ Humans will never become obsolete, but need to carve out a new role: AI alone will not drive solutions, but must be supported by intelligent humans that can slow down, move away from autopilot thinking and ask the right questions. True curiosity and critical thinking will be more important than ever - e.g. "Curiosity drives exploration, AI drives exploitation" (Tiger Tyagarajan, Starla Sireno)
✅ Not just about speed, efficiency & crowdsourcing, but AI will expand the human potential: starting to use LLM's in our daily lives also has the potential to massively shift the way we look at things, and help us start thinking AND learning in new ways. The future may even require new education models where we might learn in bursts to keep up with the change. (Jenny Nicholson)
✅ Shift from digitization into automation will only happen with demonstrated results: There are already companies emerging to leverage AI to launch new products at speed (NotCo with plant-based 'non-foods', and ITONICS with innovation at scale). Tailoring the AI used with companies' own data is critical. But to convince customers of the power of automated approaches, sometimes these startups have to go to market with their own products before finding customers. (Christian Mühlroth, Aadit Patel)
✅ Data is key, yet the biggest bottleneck is not knowing where to start: while we know it's here, and its moving at lightning speed, many challenges lie ahead - reliability, repeatability, debugability, traceability and teachability - per Marco Casalaina. The biggest fear of employees however is the knowledge gap. 60% of leaders think their companies lack the vision & quality talent for AI adoption, and 65% of employees say they don't know how to use AI (Beth Gaeta, Dom Heinrich, Starla Sireno)
We are live with day 2 of the Autonomous Innovation Summit 🚀
