Family goals on point! Chandler and I just finished our Quarterly Family Planning Offsite today. AMA We've been running these every quarter for the past 5+ years. Here is the structure that we've found works best: Intro - 15min (write separately, then share) - Best news from the last 90 days - What's working in our family? - What's not working in our family? Previous Quarter Review - 15min - Revenue: Goal vs. Actual - Profit: Goal vs. Actual - Goals: (Aim to achieve 90%+) Vision Review - 30min - Review our mission - Review values - Review 10-3-and-1 year goals - Ask of each element - is this still 100% true? Edit where necessary. Establish Next Quarter's Goals - (60min) - Write out all possible goals we could focus on - Read through "what's not working" to see if anything shoudl be addressed - Share lists, then whittle down to a manageable amount for the quarter Set Next Quarter Budget - 30min - Based on the goals for the quarter, adjust budget where necessary Tackle Key Issues - 60min (to be honest only spent 20min today) - Start w "What's not working" - Ask any other major issues? - Rank them all by urgency/importance and work through as many as possible Next Steps (10min) - Review next steps Eat! --- If you want the outlines for our weekly and annual family meetings I can DM you the spreadsheet, just let me know in the comments.

I'm trying to imagine how this would go between my NICU nurse wife - who does nothing like this at any point in time with her job - and myself, and I'm chuckling out loud at my desk. Cannot fathom this kind of structured business-like discussion between us, but don't get it twisted....I think it's amazing. How'd this go the first time you did it vs now? Which part is the hardest? Most awkward? Easiest? Most beneficial? The 'profit' part of the conversation is the one I just keep laughing about. 'Babe we said we were only going to spend X....' I think I should hire a 3rd party consultant for that part of the discussion =) This is great stuff, man. Thanks for sharing!

Lexi Bozarth these legends right here are who I've been talking about. Question Blake: assuming the rev and profit goals are actual financial total rev / profit across all business activities for your fam? And the quarterly Goals ... a) how many do you limit to, and b) do you make sure you always hit on particular categories (vs. just land on the top 3-5 for that particular quarter no matter how over/under represented categories may be)?

This framework is incredible, dude. What time/setting has worked best for y'all to do this? Do you block out a whole afternoon & head to a coffee shop? Get a sitter & go out for a date night? Overnight trip?

The annual retreat with my wife to go over our strategic family planning is one of my favorite weekends of the year. Love the framework!

Blake Smith Love this! We set up something similar to help manage the household and to put in place some frameworks for how we all want things to work, kids involved too. It was a game changer for getting everyone's voice heard and setting up the house in a way that works better for everyone. Would love a copy of your spreadsheet too.

This is a fantastic practice. I would love this outline so I can make this a recurring practice with my family. Well done!
