Today is #PTSDAwarenessDay 💙 #PTSD can develop after any traumatic event - including medical emergencies like burns, sepsis, or cancer treatment. In fact, it's estimated that up to a third of burns survivors suffer symptoms of PTSD during their recovery 🌧️ Our vision is a future where patients come out of surgeries and accidents unscathed, both physically and mentally. We must treat underlying conditions that increase the risk of suicide, including PTSD and TBI. ➡️ Despite decades of promising research and billions spent on clinical studies, there are no cures for the invisible wounds of PTSD and TBI. ➡️ Patients are diagnosed based on subjective, patient-reported symptoms, not in an objective way based on their unique biology. ➡️ We lack reliable, evidence-based treatments. This study stands out for a few reasons. First, the sample size they examined was huge: 6,510 adults! Second, the metanalysis was conducted in collaboration with several universities: Rush University, Western Michigan University, Utah State University, and UC Irvine. Moreover, it was published in a well-recognized European journal. It is exciting to see betrayal trauma receiving widespread acknowledgement and attention.   Lastly, this research shines a light on the importance of positive social supports and compassionate responses to those who are sharing their betrayal trauma stories. Positive social supports actually helped people reduce the severity of PTSD symptoms! When people are reaching out for help in the wake of a betrayal coming to light, it is critically important for their health and well-being that we believe them and offer compassionate, non-judgmental care. By doing so, we can actually help prevent more serious trauma symptoms from forming. I use the hyphenated word, dis-ease, to identify that this reflects being out of ease with oneself. The cluster of symptoms now diagnosed as posttraumatic stress has a long history of other names, the most enduring of which is hysteria. For centuries, hysteria was a catchall diagnosis that encompassed many symptoms we now recognize as PTSD and complex trauma. That we have made progress in our concepts about trauma does not belie the historical fact that each successive generation has diagnostic limitations, myths, and even falsities that oppress and slow innovations in care. This is cautionary for our time as it also sets the stage for expanding our notions of how naming often takes precedence over cause and thereby obstructs treatment that works. Cancer doesn't just affect someone physically; it takes a toll on their mental and financial well-being as well. The emotional strain and financial burden can be overwhelming. This includes the ripple effect it has on the mental health of their loved ones. A cancer diagnosis can create an emotional storm for family members and friends.
