Amazon 2023 Sustainability Report I’m proud to see all of the great progress we’ve made since we launched The Climate Pledge to reach net-zero by 2040. A couple of my favorite highlights from this year’s report: 🚙 We've rolled out more than 24,000 electric vehicles around the globe—including over 3,000 in Europe—as a part of our efforts to decarbonize Amazon's transportation network. 💡 We’ve achieved our goal of matching 100% of the electricity our operations consume with renewable energy—seven years early. Huge congrats to everyone involved! In addition to the report, we also just announced the launch of the “Amazon Sustainability Exchange”—a new, free website offering guidelines, playbooks, and science models that Amazon has used throughout our sustainability journey. Some years ago, when Amazon voluntarily pledged to reach Paris climate agreement targets earlier than 2030, many didn't see it feasible. But this bold commitment is going according to schedule - details published in the 2023 sustainability report. One thing I think is super useful that the company is launching the Amazon Sustainability Exchange, providing free resources to suppliers. It’s fascinating. One read is that they are leveraging their own massive investments to induce their supplier evosystem to become more sustainable which is a goal of ESG standards. Another reading is they are using ESG as a lever to induce suppliers to become dependent on their infrastructure. I figure both are true.

Here are few takeaways from Amazon’s latest Sustainability Report below. Amazon releases its annual Sustainability Report annually to showcase its progress in becoming a more sustainable company. Five years into its Climate Pledge, the  annual report highlights the company's efforts to become a more sustainable entity for customers, employees, and the planet. Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund has invested in 26 emerging climate start-ups and facilitated the recruitment of over 500 companies across 45 countries to join the initiative. Selected highlights: ⦾Amazon has been the largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy for four years, and has over 500 global solar and wind projects.   ⦾Amazon's newly launched Sustainability Exchange provides valuable information to assist companies of all sizes in achieving net zero. ⦾Since 2015, Amazon has reduced packaging weight by 43% and avoided over 3 million metric tons, including nearly half a million tons in 2023. Amazon operates over 24,000 electric vehicles globally, with 680 million packages delivered by EVs in 2023. ⦾New research suggests AWS's infrastructure is 4.1 times more efficient than on-premises, and optimizing workloads can reduce the carbon footprint by up to 99%. ⦾Amazon set new standards for U.S. construction design in 2023 to reduce indoor water use by 40%, and was 41% towards achieving water positivity by 2030 in its data centers, investing in 15 water replenishment projects. Amazon has invested in initiatives to operate its business in more sustainable ways. As it focuses on artificial intelligence, the energy required will place additional pressure to act in a carbon neutral manner. The investment into renewable energy is good but lets not look past the energy required to offer AI at scale. Amazon plans to update its Supply Chain Standards in the upcoming year, making it mandatory for suppliers to share their carbon emissions data and establish emissions reduction targets. This move is in line with Amazon's commitment, as outlined in its 2022 Sustainability Report, to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2040. The company aims to address Scope 3 emissions, which constitute more than 75% of its total emissions and originate outside its direct control. Kara Hartnett Hurst, Vice President of Worldwide Sustainability at Amazon, stated that achieving carbon neutrality requires the company to minimise its carbon footprint throughout its global supply chain. Despite the challenges posed by activities beyond its operational control, Amazon is determined to work with its supply chain partners to facilitate their own decarbonisation efforts. To support its suppliers' decarbonisation endeavours, Amazon intends to provide tools and products for emission tracking and reduction. The company plans to aid select suppliers in transitioning to carbon-free electricity sources. While specific supplier requirements weren't detailed in the report, Amazon's Supply Chain Standards are applicable to various stakeholders such as vendors, contractors, and selling partners. Other big companies, such as IKEA and Gucci, have begun to support initiatives that help their suppliers to decarbonise. Any why wouldn’t they? While it is currently not compulsory to report on all Scope 3 emissions, this may very much change in the coming years. Additionally, tackling Scope 3 emissions can bring great co-benefits to the business, such as de-risking value chains, bringing about innovation and more accurate carbon reporting. Do I have my gripes with Amazon? Definitely. But it’s great to see them taking the onus in helping their suppliers, who usually cannot do so due to the high upfront cost. I’m intrigued to see how one of the world’s largest corporations with one of the most complex supply chains will be able to pull this off.

Amazon is addressing sustainability complexity, and acting in many directions. The visible initiatives are the expression of a mindset that has to change, too. Amazon just published its 2022 sustainability report and announced that it will be updating its supplier policy to include requirements that suppliers “share their carbon emissions and set carbon goals.” The company says this will include all suppliers including “selling partners,” Amazon’s description of both vendors and companies that sell through Amazon Marketplace. Wal-Mart has already established such requirements for its suppliers. The two companies together account for nearly 20% of all retail sales and 45% of online sales in the U.S. We can safely expect other large retailers to follow these companies’ leads. In practice, many middle market companies will need to track and be accountable for their Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions data (https://bit.ly/47pRUI6) where previously they never had to.
