Starting with the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equality Act (MHPAEA) of 2008 and then continuing with the ACA, all health insurance providers are required to provide some degree of substance abuse treatment to their members. May is Mental Health Awareness Month! During this important month, let's take a moment to raise awareness about mental health and the support available. Did you know that certain health insurance policies can play a crucial role in providing comprehensive mental health care? It's true! These policies can cover a range of mental health services, including therapy sessions, medication, and even in-patient treatment if needed. However, it's essential to note that not all mental health professionals accept insurance. Many psychiatrists and therapists choose not to participate in insurance networks due to various reasons, such as administrative issues and reimbursement limitations. This can make it challenging for individuals seeking mental health support to find in-network providers. But don't worry! There are still ways to access quality mental health care. Some health insurance policies offer out-of-network benefits, allowing you to seek treatment from providers who may not be in-network. Additionally, there are online platforms that offer affordable mental health services and resources including therapist access for affordable copays. If you receive public assistance, you can hit a benefits cliff when your income goes up. The increase may mean you now make too much to qualify for the same amount of assistance, but not enough to cover the cost of the benefits you’re losing. For people with disabilities who want to work, the benefits cliff can be even more complicated. Chronic conditions can be expensive to care for without full health insurance coverage. People with disabilities may have a more limited range of job options open to them. And those jobs may not come with full health insurance coverage. In our latest story, written by Gabriella Chiarenza, find out first hand how people are navigating these challenges and the essential role of those who’ve been there in Maine’s approach to the benefits cliff. https://lnkd.in/ebKdRKc6 #Benefitscliff #PublicAssistance #Disabilityemployment
