Long Beach joined #OpportunityCities (TOPC) in 2022 to combat pollution and enhance green spaces. The city needed a digital tool to educate the community about the importance of trees, improve the city’s ability to track trees, make public data more accessible, and boost community engagement. Alongside partners Google and Centre for Public Impact, with generous support from the Knight Foundation, TOPC created The Long Beach Tree Map 🌳. This innovative solution includes an “interactive tree mapping tool using existing tree data to map out locations for future sites where trees could be planted and maintained via educational engagement.” In our latest update from student analyst Jupleen Kaur, we take a deeper look at this project and how TOPC enabled Long Beach to work towards their climate goals: https://bit.ly/3XOxJ3Q #UrbanSustainability #CivicTech #GreenSpace #LongBeach #ClimateAction

🌆 *Reviving Urban Ecosystems: A Vision for Sustainable Cities* 🏞️ Urban areas, though a mere fraction of the Earth's surface, are where more than half of humanity calls home. Despite their bustling streets and towering skyscrapers, cities are ecosystems that profoundly impact our lives. Functional urban ecosystems help purify our air and water, combat the urban heat island effect, and contribute to our well-being by providing refuge from hazards and spaces for recreation. Surprisingly, they can even nurture biodiversity. However, our urban ecosystems often represent a dramatic departure from the natural landscapes they've displaced, frequently found in a state of degradation. Inadequate planning leads to soil sealing and minimal greenery amid the concrete jungles of houses, roads, and factories. Emissions from industry, traffic, and households, along with waste, contaminate our air, waterways, and soils. Uncontrolled urban sprawl further devours precious natural habitats and fertile farmlands. The restoration of urban ecosystems demands collective awareness and commitment from citizens and policymakers alike. Green spaces must be at the forefront of urban planning. Civic organizations and municipal authorities can spearhead efforts to clean up water bodies, embark on tree-planting initiatives, and establish urban woodlands and wildlife havens within parks, schools, and public areas. Permeable sidewalks and urban wetlands provide defense against flooding and pollution. Neglected industrial zones can be rehabilitated into urban nature reserves and serene recreational spots. 🏙️ *A Collaborative Transformation* 🏙️ The path to rejuvenating urban ecosystems is a shared endeavor. Together, we can forge sustainable cities where humans coexist harmoniously with nature. Join #maasaathuvaan in our mission to inspire urban renaissance. Let's rebuild cities where ecosystems thrive, and residents prosper. 🌆🌿 #sustainability #jalshakti #cop28uae #renewableenergy #savesoil #savewater #saveenergy #plasticpollution #climateaction #climatechange #climateemergency #sdg #kardle #earthnetzero #missionlife #oneearthonefamilyonefuture #g21 #bharat Daniel Nachtigall Goni Ben Gera Bill Hare Charlotte Gardes-Landolfini Claudia Milena Agudelo Palacio

🌿 Reviving Nature to Combat Climate Crisis 🌿 91% of European Cities Turn to Nature-Based Solutions As our planet grapples with the dual crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, cities across Europe are stepping up to the challenge. Here's how they're harnessing the power of nature-based solutions: 1. Rewilding Principle: Imagine urban spaces teeming with life—a symphony of birdsong, vibrant wildflowers, and thriving ecosystems. Rewilding, the process of restoring natural habitats and processes, is at the heart of this transformation. By reintroducing native species, cities can create resilient ecosystems that absorb carbon, regulate temperatures, and provide havens for biodiversity. 2. Biodiversity Boost: Biodiversity isn't just about counting species; it's about fostering intricate connections between plants, animals, and humans. European cities are embracing green corridors, urban forests, and pollinator-friendly gardens. These green oases not only combat heat islands but also support diverse wildlife—from bees and butterflies to hedgehogs and songbirds. 3. Nature Recovery Strategies: Picture a city where every rooftop hosts a mini forest, where wetlands filter rainwater, and where green walls adorn buildings. Nature recovery strategies are turning this vision into reality. By integrating green infrastructure into urban planning, cities enhance resilience, reduce flood risks, and improve air quality. 4. Community Action: The success of nature-based solutions hinges on community engagement. Citizens, businesses, and local governments collaborate to plant trees, restore wetlands, and create urban parks. These collective efforts ripple outward, fostering a sense of stewardship and pride. 🌍 Global Call to Action: We're all part of this interconnected web of life. Whether you're a policymaker, a student, or a concerned citizen, your actions matter. Support rewilding initiatives, advocate for green spaces, and champion policies that prioritize nature. Together, we can build climate-resilient cities that thrive alongside the natural world. 🔗 Read the full report below #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateAction #BiodiversityMatters #biodiversity #generationrestoration #wildlife https://lnkd.in/eiJRm_AU

I fully agree with this, as long as we don’t neglect the compact city as our priority - building comfortable density in ways that allow good, sociable city environments that allow for high quality modes of public transport. There must be a presumption in favour of building on brownfield first and avoiding sprawl. It is so blatant to see, however, that the inaccessible and biodiversity poor qualities of our green belts could be improved. To see how more biodiverse environments can be created through development rather than by prohibiting it. We now have good metrics, in Urban Greening Factors and Biodiversity Net Gain tools to make sure we correctly achieve new green belt communities and better green belt, regenerative natural environments.

We need more housing to accommodate population growth, but it's crucial to integrate environmentally sound planning and development practices for a sustainable future. Take Larrabee Springs, for example. They've embraced green-built practices, constructing more than 340 affordable, solar-powered homes while prioritizing environmental stewardship. By investing in green building techniques, they've not only created housing to meet the needs of our community but have also heavily invested in improving the surrounding land and ecosystems, restoring and creating 23 acres of wetlands, buffers, and stream corridors. It’s a model worth repeating! To create a more sustainable future for generations to come, we should ensure that the land we inhabit — and its ecosystems — continue to flourish. . . . #SustainableDevelopment #EnvironmentalStewardship #GreenBuilding #LarrabeeSprings

🌿 Nature's Resilience: Our Untapped Weapon in Building Thriving Cities 🏙️ Hey everyone, I've been fascinated by the concept of nature-based solutions (NBS) for urban resilience lately. 🤯 As cities face the mounting challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, NBS offer a powerful, yet underutilized, weapon in our arsenal. But what exactly are NBS? 🤔 They're actions that protect, manage, and restore natural ecosystems within and around cities. Think green roofs, urban parks, pocket forests, and even rain gardens. 🌳🌱 These aren't just pretty spaces; they're game-changers. Here's how NBS can make our cities more resilient: ➡ Climate Champions: NBS act like sponges, soaking up floodwaters and reducing the risk of urban flooding. 🌧️ They also cool our cities, combatting the urban heat island effect. 🥵 ➡ Biodiversity Boost: NBS create vital habitats for pollinators and other wildlife, enhancing urban biodiversity and fostering a healthier environment for all. 🐝🐦 ➡ Well-being Warriors: Studies show that spending time in nature improves mental and physical health. NBS bring nature closer to us, boosting our well-being and happiness. 😊 And it's not just theory! Cities around the world are already reaping the benefits of NBS. Oarsoaldea in Spain, for example, has transformed its flood-prone riverfront into a thriving green corridor. Dublin's Dodder River is another success story, with restored wetlands providing flood protection and improved water quality. 🏞️ So, let's embrace the power of nature! Let's make our cities not just concrete jungles, but thriving ecosystems where people and nature can flourish together. 💪 #NBS #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #NatureBasedSolutions #CitiesOfTheFuture https://lnkd.in/gpHCN2tG

Can allowing greenbelt development bring gains for Nature, as Tony Juniper CBE argues? We need to make radical changes to get Nature in recovery on 30% of our land by 2030. To do that needs investment, not benign neglect. We have to #FinanceGreen, while we #GreenFinance. That means investing in the benefits Nature brings, like Natural Flood Management, while insuring that investments are sustainable, countering Climate Change and increasing biodiversity. Designated Greenbelt, mostly a post-War project, more than doubled between 1971 and 1993 ( The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)). But what is the value of Nature depleted croplands, mainly growing just 3 species, in fields without hedgerows, wild flowers, birds and insects, where our waterways are confined to unnatural channels? We need a new approach to protect and restore Nature. That requires challenging shibboleths that are not delivering for Nature.
