Workarounds. This comes naturally to me. When I cannot find information or locate a person, I naturally ask, "Where else does this exist?" "Who might know this individual?" And often, the answer is farther afield than the typical query response from Google or Chat GPT. It's because I worked as a print news reporter for more than two decades. And in the news business, you learn to follow paper trails and money trails and all sorts of trails. It's a skill I bring to this work as a career coach as I educate my clients about the ways to find out about a job and network more effectively. I have to remind myself frequently that not everyone feels as comfortable as I do reaching out to strangers. Not everyone has a done a lot of it, so ideas don't come readily. But here are a few that could help you if you are trying to find out more about the company you are interested in (or trying to locate a hiring manager) and aren't having a lot of luck: Think logically about who else does business with that company. If the firm is local, ask around in your professional network to see who, for instance, provides their IT services. There may be vendors or project partners who know the principals in the division of interest. Find out who used to work there. LinkedIn searches will find profiles of all the people where that company name appears, even if it was two jobs ago. Read whatever you can find about the company and see who is quoted. Business newspapers are often treasure troves of clues that lead you to the people you're looking for. Look for interviews, trend stories, and those sections that run the photos of recent hires. And here's one you probably haven't thought of: What boards are the company's employees serving on? Not all nonprofit boards invite only the top C-suite officers. Look online at board lists from the city where that company is located (arts organizations, social services groups, etc. often publish their boards). Could you use your interest in that organization to make a connection with that person? Ditto with professional organizations germane to your industry. Look up the National Association of Whateveritisyoudo and see who's on the board. In case you missed it, there’s been some problematic updates at Glassdoor that are worth talking about 📣 For clarity, the information is stored in the back-end and not displayed publicly. Which means that no, employers shouldn’t be able to find out it was you who left that review. But the issue is that the change occurred without users’ providing consent. And more so that with this, there are potential risks that could truly be disruptive to reviewers’ lives in inrepairable ways in the case of a data breach or software glitch. Platforms like Glassdoor are essential for so many reasons. Often, employees simply do not have a voice without risking their livelihood. Exit interviews, if even offered, are not necessarily a safe place to express issues. Upon separation, there’s all sorts of silencing paperwork required to be signed in order to receive severance, unemployment, etc. In reality, there’s not many options for employers to be held accountable for bad behavior. And the risks are often too high for past or present employees to speak out. It was never a perfect platform. It’s always been clear when HR and other execs post their own 5 star ratings in order to curve the average upwards ⭐️ But still a necessary place for jobseekers to stop along the way. And for employees to share experiences safely and anonymously. In the #beautyindustry, we have Estee Laundry which is like if Glassdoor and Deux Moi had a love child 👼🏼 And we’ve also seen the rise of people advocating for themselves openly on platforms like TikTok, which is incredibly brave. So what will happen with the once trusted Glassdoor?? I’ve seen a few different takes on this and I’m curious to hear yours. Some people are deleting their accounts entirely to avoid any risk. Glassdoor has a new policy: they're updating user profiles to add the real name of users who leave anonymous reviews about their employers. In the unlikely event you've not heard of them, they're almost a counterpart to LinkedIn. In LinkedIn, you publicly connect. You might even find a place you think you want to work. So you head over to Glassdoor and employees publish frank, anonymous reviews, salary details, sample interview questions, and so on. The entire point of Glassdoor is that you feel you can be honest since anonymity shields you from retaliation. Of course, it's more complex than that. Some leave too much information, making it possible with smaller companies to guess who left the review. Others leave reviews which appear—I'm being charitable—less than completely honest. But overall, the more reviews a company gets, the better you can understand what working their would actually be like. Attaching real names to accounts totally destroys the trust model. To be fair, you can't actually *see* a user's account. Glassdoor hides this, but as with anything, there are tons of ways you could try to ferret out this information. Just one data breach, for example, could put tons of jobs at risk.
