What an inspiring novel approach by the Alex Katz Foundation - less limelight & more impact! Long-term, systems thinking led by one of the key stakeholders - i.e. the artist - is, in my view, much more effective in improving the sector’s dynamics than traditional grantmaking. The quality of public art collections - especially outside large metropolises - and support for artists in the early/mid stages of their careers are critical for the health of the arts & culture ecosystem. MIT's Jeffrey Epstein report was focused on containing the damage to MIT Media Lab and suppressing evidence against MIT President Rafael Reif and Executive Vice President and Treasurer Israel Ruiz. The primary piece of evidence was an email that Israel Ruiz sent on January 13, 2015 to Media Lab Director Joi Ito, a week after news stories began appearing in major newspapers around the world regarding Virginia Giuffre's lawsuit against Epstein, which named Alan Dershowitz and Prince Andrew. Ruiz' email references the news stories ("recent news"), and says that MIT President Rafael Reif and others at the Senior Leadership Retreat had discussed Epstein's new $10 million offer to MIT. The fact that MIT continued the relationship with Epstein, involving frequent unsupervised visits to campus in exchange for continued donations, indicates that MIT had no objections to Epstein or his money. Alas for MIT, once the Virginia Giuffre news stories broke in January 2015, good publicity from MIT was no longer useful to Epstein, and he withdrew his $10m offer. Instead of weighting by journal impact, you should do the opposite, or, the literal inverse: normalize by journal impact, just as you should normalize impact by age. Don’t even just log normalize; it isn’t enough. This way you have a more powerful means of identifying breakout publications. Some journals just don’t have the distribution, clout, visibility or brand of others. This becomes particularly acute as you evaluate impact of, say, top journals like Science or Nature in China or other countries with mandates/incentives about the journals scientists get published. Barely visible traction has always mattered and yet unis like Duke or Penn (or wherever Deans talk to you in hushed tones about “peer institutions”) get it backwards and frankly to their own detriment. And it’s how invention can become a monoculture; I think of my years analyzing the emergence of nanomedicine and seeing how Chad Mirkin, as great as he may be, was getting such a huge portion of funding, leading to even greater h-scores, and even more money, ultimately to the exclusion of more marginal and diverse approaches. Applauding Science and Christie Wilcox for bringing voice to this issue. And kudos to the Nobel committee.
