✳ We are thrilled to share our exclusive interview with the amazing Professor Don Ingber, founding director of the Wyss Institute at Harvard University and pioneer of the organs-on-chip #OoC technology. 🔵 Among the highlights of the interview, Prof. Ingber discussed the success of Emulate, Inc.'s Liver-chips in predicting drug-induced liver injury (#DILI), bone marrow chips and their potential to assess drug side effects and contribute to personalized medicine and the reasons that make #OoC technology a “revolutionary approach to better understand human diseases and assess drug toxicity.” 🔴 The researcher also emphasised the need for #robust methods and the necessity to #harmonize globally the quality of qualification of techniques and validation of criteria. He also mentioned the current obstacles to the acceptance of these new methods and social barriers, notably in regulatory toxicology. 🌟 The interview reflects both the positive and constructive vision of the researcher, and his enthusiasm regarding the evolution of biomedical research and the potential of OoC technology. Liver MPS | DMPK | Presidential awardee-microfluidics (GYTI'19) | Prime Minister's Research Fellow (PMRF'18) | IIT-H’23 (Ph.D. in BME) | NIT-Surat’18 (B.Tech in MechE) | EUROoCS | FRAME UK
Liver-on-Chip technology mimics the microarchitecture and functions of the liver in a miniaturized format. Using human-derived cells and microfluidic systems, it allows for real-time monitoring of cellular responses, making it invaluable for clearance prediction, toxicity prediction, and disease modeling. It's a game-changer in pharmaceutical research, personalized medicine, and space medicine. Here, I discuss the 4 pivotal areas where liver-on-chips are expected to impact the drug discovery. 1. Predicting DILI: Repeated dosing (chronic DILI predictions) to immune system integration 2. Hepatic Clearance: Long-term transporters, metabolic enzymes, and albumin secretion activity to predicting clearance of metabolically stable compounds. 3. Multi-Organ Integration: PK profiles & bioavailability (Fa,Fg,Fh) predictions 4. Space Health & Liver-on-Chip: Microgravity to Personalized Medicine #OrganOnChips #LiverOnChips #SpaceMedicine #PersonalizedMedicine #MicrophysiologicalSystems #TissueChips
