Recall the expression..."too many cooks spoil the broth"? Having too many high-level executives or C-suite members can lead to overlapping responsibilities, diluted accountability, and you guessed it silos & turf wars. Not long ago, the C-suite was a lean machine. You had a CEO, COO, CFO, and a couple of “wild card” execs like a General Counsel, a senior department head like an SVP/EVP of Sales or Marketing, or a group President. That was it. At F500 companies. Fast forward to today, and it’s tempting for founders and entrepreneurs in scaling companies to bring on talent with flashy titles early on. But here’s the deal: this move can sometimes backfire, big time. Many entrepreneurs regret hiring C-suite execs too soon, shelling out big bucks, only to end up burned by unmet expectations. Been there, done that?? You can ask for a friend. The reality check - Big titles might have credibility and experience (maybe), but they don't always translate to the grind and flexibility needed in a growing company. Instead of driving value, these hires can become costly mistakes. If you're in the early stages, focus on versatile, growth-driven team members. Many companies have a specific type of customer they sell to, but they usually only consider the account level. They may define their ideal customer based on broad categories such as Healthcare, HR providers, Education, Finance, etc. However, an ideal customer profile should include deeper attributes beyond just company size and industry. When exploring the ideal customer profile of a YC-backed startup, we found that our best customers share specific attributes. They operate in competitive markets, have a well-established decision-making process, are actively scaling, hire globally, and prioritize compliance, with in-house HR and Finance support. We also found that different job roles within these companies have distinct reasons for buying our product. HR wants to streamline paperwork, Finance wants to make payments in no time, and Legal wants to make sure everything is going complaint. Understanding these diverse needs and using them in our positioning and messaging was crucial for our business growth. The best sales process means very little without this one key component (CRO / VP version) Yes, you need frontline managers that can perform proper sales stage inspection (see my previous post on the frontline manager version). Anything else needed? Actually, yes. Organizational alignment. ✅ 1. Managerial reinforcement. Sellers have to hear it from frontline managers more than once (research shows 7 times to stick). ✅ 2. Sellers need to hear senior leadership is supportive and behind the process. Key learning: get key execs with influence exposed to the project. Even go as far as to get input DURING the effort. This generates far better support and generates buy-in from the exec team. ✅3. Lastly, sellers need training and enablement to show them what good looks like and ensure they have the right step-by-step actions to make them successful. Redesigning and implementing a new sales process is HARD and it takes time. Whether you're a startup, scale up, or post IPO....It's not for the feint of heart, especially as you get bigger. There are a bunch of great Account Executives... the ones that achieve success over a long time horizon have one thing in common... They give a damn. They care about the success of the business development reps that support them. They check on their mental health and they constantly ask leadership about how the BDRs are tracking towards their goals. They aid Customer Success Reps in onboarding clients. They lead with humility and support. Just like a point guard, they get everyone on the team involved and on the same page.
