The Biden administration has unveiled new flood risk standards that account for climate change trends, including sea level rise, for the first time.

FEMA orders major change in post-disaster rebuilding. Under the new rule, the agency will “integrate current and future changes in flooding based on climate science” when it estimates flood risk, factoring in sea level rise and intensified erosion that will get worse over the course of the century," rather than basing its decisions on historical data. https://lnkd.in/ghJECphV #FEMA #disaster

Climate risks are increasing faster than our investment in climate adaptation - communities and businesses are becoming more vulnerable and less resilient. Needs existing flood defences to be properly maintained and more investment, including in #NatureBasedSolutions #ClimateChange #ClimateRisk #ClimateAdaptation

We urgently need high-quality, public flood risk maps that the government stands by (including planning regulations). Then, we can focus on rethinking what it means to live a good coastal life in the face of climate change and how we collectively support those who may face decreases in-home or land value. https://bityl.co/OdMK

I understand there is no money to be made from solutions, when we can keep coming back to the table with treatments for the symptoms. The new predictive software programs are where the flaws are created, shit in will always = shit out. Most hydraulic models are based on steady state prescriptive formula, end of pipe - linear engineering. In reality the whole pattern is random, so performance becomes more relative when random and transient flow calculations are adopted and can bring us closer to that reality. One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind, would be to decentralize the 30++ Government Quangos/silo's sat on water projects? What is taboo in most consultant lead surveys and reports is adding in recycle, re-use, but more importantly recharge. Whilst the committees are manned by industry that only look to "single use - once through the meter revenue streams then the headlines will never change.

Sea level rise will create a profound shift in coastal flooding, causing tide and storm surge heights to increase and reach further inland. We need to be smart not just about how we build, but how we rebuild after flooding and other climate-driven disasters. Happy to see progress from FEMA this week with their *new* final rule to implement the influential Federal Flood Risk Management Standard, which will now consider climate science when rebuilding after flooding. The new rule will make taxpayer-funded projects far more resilient to flooding, protecting federal investments and reducing the risk of damage and loss from floods. #OceanClimateAction https://lnkd.in/eNnwy_5u

I am excited to share our new paper evaluating the quality of networks of plans to advance flood resilience, with my coauthors Sierra C Woodruff, Sara Meerow, Bryce Hannibal, Melina Matos, Ph.D., and Philip Gilbertson! ---- Urban flood resilience is a function of the collective intent of all planning efforts or network of plans. Yet, most studies focus on single plan types; it is unclear whether plans work cohesively. We asked to what extent do networks of plans uniformly foster resilience to flooding. We adapted plan quality evaluation methodology to evaluate four cities’ networks of plans. All four networks uniformly state goals, including flood resilience and sustainability goals, but exclude details on flood exposure and vulnerability. Moreover, all four networks lack implementation guidelines. We identify opportunities for more integrated planning to tackle flooding and climate change. https://lnkd.in/gSyn5rzw
New publication! Our paper, "Quality of Cities’ Networks of Plans and Prospects for Flood Resilience," has just been published! This study explores to what extent networks of plans uniformly foster resilience to flooding. Our findings identify opportunities for more integrated planning to tackle flooding and climate change. I'm grateful to work with this incredible team of co-authors and contribute to this important conversation. Check out our paper for a deeper understanding of how cities can better prepare for future floods. https://lnkd.in/evEXzAXW #UrbanPlanning #FloodResilience #Sustainability #ClimateChange #ResearchPublication #resilience

As coastal Texas is starting to recover from the first in a series of expected dangerous Atlantic hurricanes, new flood risk standards were announced yesterday with an aim to enhance the resilience of public infrastructure. The Federal Flood Risk Management Standard (FFRMS) mandates that federal agencies account for both current and future flood risks in their decision-making processes when funding projects, ranging from bridges to fire stations. This new standard specifically applies to projects funded by FEMA, including new construction or repairs of buildings and infrastructure that have sustained significant damage. Weather Source’s Climate Insights products, including OnPoint Risk Analytics and Climate Change Risk, offer predictive analyses of climate change scenarios. These tools provide insights into the potential impacts of flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes on global business operations, helping organizations strategically adapt and mitigate disruptive threats. https://lnkd.in/efTdUFG3 #FloodRisk #ClimateInsights #ClimateRisk #ClimateRisk Analytics #ClimatePreparedness For more posts like this, join our Climate Risk Intelligence Forum: https://lnkd.in/d65n8vt3
